People are rly hung on a dollar amount when it is a drop in a bucket in terms of cap space...

Gonchar's still a good player but 5 million a year for a guy who will be 40 next year? A bit to much if you ask me.

If he is still putting up points good enough for top 10 in D man scoring then why does age mean anything? Gonchar had more points than Doughty, Bouwmeester, Edler, Hedman, Chara, Boyle, OEL and Pietrangelo to just name a few.

That is what you are going with? Perhaps we should put an * on every single award and the Stanley Cup winner.

Spoken by someone who clearly didn't watch him play in many games this season. Gonchar was exposed during the playoffs, but during the season he was dynamite for the Senators. Without him they don't even sniff the playoffs.

He'll do well in Dallas, I was really hoping the Sens would keep him.

It's an overpayment but I take two things into consideration: Dallas' amount of cap space and he would have gone to the market and probably have gotten just as much from another team or even the KHL.

It's too much and the second year makes me a bit worried but it's not as bad because the Stars aren't strapped for cap space. If they were this would be a lot worse than it actually is. It's not going to break them. I don't think Gonchar's even close to worth $5M a year at this point (thought $3M-$3.5M AAV would have been about right) and I fully expect him to slow down even more but it's not terrible. It's free agency, they had to overpay.

It reminds me of the Vancouver Sundin deal conceptually, which is if you have free cap space and need a hole filled, pay to fill that hole through free agency. What is the point of cap space if you're not going to use it? It buys the Stars time to develop somebody to replace Gonchar instead of putting them in too early. There may also be intangibles with respect to Gonchar mentoring all their young D as well, which is very difficult to quantify.

Are his best years behind him? Absolutely! Does that diminish his ability to contribute at a high level? Absolutely not!

This is.... strange

He's far from bad but two years and 10 million seems like a bit much

Dallas can easily afford it though so it's not like this is a BAD decision, it just seems like a lot of money

Market value for a guy who was one of Ottawa's 2 saviors on the blue line last season (Methot). Thought Murray would have inked him for this, but we all assume he's got something else in mind - or we hope he does.

This is surely Gonchar's last contract. Hopefully for the Stars, he won't just sit on it.

Minimal risk taken here by the Stars with a potential for a moderate reward. Good move for both sides.

For a team that spends to the cap ceiling this is a horrible deal. However, the Stars are not in that situation so the cap hit is trivial.

I also fail to see how people disapprove of this deal based off of "principle". A one to two million dollar overpayment on a team that only spends up to the floor was not a driving force behind the lockout. It was the big market teams who had the cash and felt the need to deal out long term deals for the sole purpose of circumventing the cap.

As I see it, this contract will also be irrelevant once free agency begins. Do you think the agent of a young and upcoming defenseman like Subban will tell the Canadiens "Hey, that (now) average player Gonchar is worth $5 million, my client is worth way more!"? Most likely not. Any competent agent would realize that this is a completely different scenario, and that such a notion would fail as a formidable negotiating ploy.

I really don't know why people are ******** on this deal. Aside from the series against the pens, gonchar had a really solid year def worth 5mil. I'd probably have done 5m, 3.5m for the deal if he wanted two years
