Good luck Gonchar. I would have preferred to keep him for one more year while Alfie is still on the team.

Still moves the puck wickedly, is smart on defense, and is a good leader.

That's sort of what was going on when the Stars traded for Goligoski in the first place.
didn't they already play together in Pitt?

One season, and it was by far the best hockey Goligoski played in his career.

Maybe a couple shifts on the power play...never with any sort of regularity, though.

Since they have a relatively young defensive core they need someone to mentor their rookies.

Pretty sure he's being brought in to mentor Connauton in particular.

has Gonchar played in the West? At his age, does he want the extra travel miles?

Gonchar's last season, Goligoski was on the left point for much of the year (then he was traded). Might remember because he was the only point guy other than Ryan Whitney who was capable of finishing the Sid/Whitney play.

Why would Dallas do this if Gonchar is possibly going to the KHL?

I thought it was reported that he already had a deal in place with Magnitogorsk?

Gonchar has always been a favorite of the Detroit brass when they talk about players around the league, not surprised Nill is going to try hard to land him. Good trade for both sides, especially if they can talk Sergei into sticking around for two more years, if not no harm done and the pick comes back.

Do wonder if this could be a part of a Benn or Eriksson package on Malkin to want him to stick around and have his buddy in the same city. Would be interesting, Dallas could afford the 10 million plus for Geno and has some intriguing assets if the Pens really do shop him.

Its a conditional 6th. If he doesn't sign, they probably get to keep their pick.

Why not give it a shot?

It's no lose, it's conditional so they give up nothing if they don't get him signed. If they do get him signed they only give up a sixth and they probably need to negotiate exclusively and give him a big payday to get him because I don't see the appeal of Dallas to Gonchar.

It's just a favour from Nieuwendyk (?) to Murray. It's like when Shero sent a 6th rounder to us for Kovalev, Alex was never going to re-sign. With some very notable exceptions, a 6th rounder is never going to make the NHL.

If Dallas is trying to build a blueline for the future, the guy makes a lot of sense. Whatever he's lost physically, he's such a smart player, particularly a smart powerplay quarterback. His mind is full of little tricks that a next generation would benefit from.

I don't, for instance, think Karlsson's great leap forward can be separated from Gonchar's acquisition. You can see him do some of the same things on the powerplay...set for what looks like a shot, take one step laterally then either whip it to a guy on the wall or toward the net in a motion that looks the same no matter which he chooses, for instance.

Yeah, but never 5-on-5. They were never defensive partners, just on the same PP unit for half a season.

Mind you I expect that to be the role they play next year if Gonchar does sign...Dallas would be smarter to pair Gonchar with a younger defenseman at even-strength.

If Gonchar agrees to a deal in Dallas, I suspect it'll be a one year thing but also it'd be good for the young D that Dallas has as a mentor.

Great deal for the Stars. We can afford to give up a conditional 6th, we have 4 picks in the top 50.

Did he decide to take a role within the organization though? I know Nill said he would like to keep him around in some capacity if possible.
