Has there been any confirmation on what happens if Gonchar signs between the draft and July 5th?

The Stars can't very well give up a draft pick they already used on a player.

Looks like the Stars are looking at another Zubov like defenseman who can help serve as a leader on the blueline. Smart move by Nill if they could get him locked up, and they have plenty of cap space to give him a decent enough offer to convince him to stay in the NHL for two more years.

Waste of a pick IMO.

Nvm, I see it's conditional.

Good for the young Stars D. Gonch will help mentor them. He's in the twilight years of his career, but with relatively sheltered minutes and PP time, he can produce solid numbers.

It could go like this

Gonchar is a future HHOFer. Just because he isn't what he used to be, doesn't mean he can't teach a young offensive defenceman a lot about the game.

He helped Karlsson blossom into something he never was - a Norris trophy winning defenceman.

Isn't that what smart non playoff teams do? Drop vets at the deadline for picks and then resign vets again in the off season.

EDIT: Meant to quote the guy on p1 asking why they would trade vets at deadline online to pick him up now. Damn quick reply POS.

Wow, that sucks. Thought he'd come back for another season or two in Ottawa.

Now who the heck do we replace him with?

Even if it wasn't conditional, it's only a sixth round pick. Nothing lost.

You're right, but that's what the NHL should strive for.

Hope Gonchar plays another couple of years in the NHL. He's still got the talent.

Gonchar's agent, JP Barry was given permission to find a trade partner for Ottawa when the Sens decided not to re-sign the vet d-man....

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 2m

KHL interest excelerated the process for Gonchar who will likely agree to a 2 year deal with the Stars. #TSN

I thought there was a roster freeze until the playoffs were over? As in, you can re-sign players but not trade them. Who knew.

Damn, that makes my Gonchar Senators jersey old now.

But it's a good trade for both. Really, Ottawa has a lot of defensemen already that showed that they might be ready to play full-time next year, plus other prospects who aren't even on the roster. Gryba, Wiercioch, and even Benoit were on the roster due to injuries nearly all year and played well and rumor has it Gonchar was looking for two years and might even bolt to the KHL so the Sens probably put all that together, plus Gonchar's age and probably didn't feel the need to keep him. Wasn't Ottawa only looking to offer one year and not the two he's looking for? Thought I heard whispers of that. So Ottawa hopes Dallas re-signs him so they get something for a guy they were going to let walk.

Dallas loses absolutely nothing if he doesn't re-sign. If he does it's a sixth-rounder for a pretty decent player and mentor. If they can get him re-signed he'll help their PP and a lot of the younger defensemen on the team and Gonchar's a good leader (been an alternate captain before). Not a bad guy to have. My only concern is the two years. I'd be fine with giving him one year but two seems iffy. I'm not sure how much longer Gonchar has in him. One is no risk, but two is a risk, albeit small (shouldn't be too problematic).

Also, I hate when these trades are made and they say "rights". The actual player is still under contract and is until July 5th. Technically, the player was traded and he is on the acquiring team's roster as soon as the trade's made. Gonchar is now Dallas property. May never play a game for them but still is on their roster. This "rights" business is only said because they have the "right" to talk to him because he is their player.

There you have it. Sens didn't want to keep him (must like what they already have and don't feel he's a huge loss). I hope he stays in the NHL too. Looks like he'll be re-signing.

Players can be traded at any time (annual roster freeze is the only exception), even after the deadline. The player just can't play for the acquiring team in the playoffs. Either that or playoff teams can't make a trade until they're eliminated. That may be for once the playoffs start. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Tomas Vokoun and Brad Stuart were both traded last year during the playoffs before the Kings even won the Cup.

Actually, in each of the last three years we've seen deals (Some of them reasonably significant) during the NHL playoffs

2012
-May 26: Washington trades Chris Bourque to Boston for Zach Hamill
-Jun 04: Washington trades Tomas Vokoun to Pittsburgh for a 7th round pick (Washington chose Sergei Kostenko)

2011:
-May 08: Phoenix trades Ethan Werek to NY Rangers for Oscar Lindberg
-Jun 01: Calgary trades Tim Erixon and a 5th round pick (NYR chose Shane McColgan) for Roman Horak and two 2nd round picks (Calgary chose Markus Granlund and Tyler Wotherspoon).
-Jun 02: Nashville trades Taylor Stefishen to Washington for Future Considerations
-Jun 07: Phoenix trades Ilya Bryzgalov to Philadelphia for Matt Clakson and a 3rd round pick (later traded to Pittsburgh, who drafted Oskar Sundqvist)

2010:
-May 13: Phoenix trades Jared Staal to Carolina for a 5th round pick (Phoenix chose Louis Domingue)
-May 25: NY Islanders trade Jyri Niemi to NY Rangers for a 6th round pick (Later traded to Atlanta, who chose Tanner Lane)
-May 28: Anaheim traded Mattias Modig to Pittsburgh for a 6th round pick (Anaheim chose Kevin Lind)
