its alright, give it time. glad to see the cfl back in ottawa. that league was in the gutter, now it has a bright future. hopefully they get a franchise in quebec city within a couple decades and make it 10 teams. that would have a nice east/west balance, and would make it more of a complete league.

I thnk it's a great name. Now they can can still use the same simple R logo on the helmet, and they can dress the exact same, and people can basically just call them the Roughriders since Redblacks isn't really a name.

The "isn't really a name" thing doesn't really wash, sadly. What's an Oompa Loompa?
Oh, it's a fictional construct. There were planes called Concordes, were they made at Place de la Concordes? It ties in to local history and Huntsy even threw a bone to the fan group that wanted the Highlanders by mentioning them during the inauguration.
It also sounds awesome in French as "Rouge et Noir". I'll be there anyway, at least at first, but winning will keep me coming back. More or less free pass Year 1, but after that...

I'm thinking the team will last long enough to have them upgrade their team name. First (and so far only) mistake Hunt's done since this all started.

Don't get me wrong, I really like it. It sounds like a name that you would have for a team that has existed for 100 years and just never got around to coming up with anything. Since they can't use Roughriders, I would say they did the next best thing. To be honest, I think it would be cool if they just called them Ottawa FC (obviously stealing the traditional 'nickname' from soccer).

I heard rumours of a jersey with a lumberjack pattern on it though? Please tell me that isn't true! They just need a classic red and black uniform.

Give it a year or two, the name will eventually feel natural. Here in Toronto, we got used to the Raptors.

As long as the franchise is well run and competitive most years, it will be fine. Plus Hunt's group is very reputable in the area does a good job with the 67's. This team will be fine.

Its really not bad.

-Easy to chant *lets go red black*

-can be shortened to the Orb, which opens up marketing *the Orb is coming, Orb wins again* or an alien in a kilt for a mascot

Well, there are certainly going to be a lot of racial jokes at this team's expense.

Holy crap, what an embarrassing name.

Its ridiculous. Absurdism. Has no place in sport. Its an abstraction. It needs to be tied to an anthropromorphic logo or avatar as you put it. This is not a cologne, like say Giorgio Beverly Hills Red for Men, its not some acrylic on canvas dual chromatic statement of love & death, of racism or whatever. Its a football team. Whats wrong with Raiders, Capitals... Big Joe Mufferaw as yer Mascot?

Indeed, the Big Muffs would be hard to top.

As I said, it wouldn't be my first choice, however...

RedBlack is not an abstraction on the level of Prince's little dohicky. Red is a colour. Black is a colour. People know what they are. The logical jump required to imagine the conjunctive between the two (as it's presented in French) is minimal. We are red and black. MacGregor Tartan.

I could be wrong, but the whole "let's pluck an image from nature/history and call the team that" schtick is more of a North American convention than a hard and fast rule to be adhered to at all costs. Black Sox, Red Sox, White Sox (the second most abused article of clothing spelled with an 'x' no less, the heathens!), Reds, All Blacks, plus every European soccer team don't exactly rely on fearsome and/or inspirational mascots.

Simple moniker...what's the message? Hopefully it's look to the field and let the play do the talking. Now that would be really unorthodox for an Ottawa football team.

I can give RedBlacks a chance.

It will eventually be changed. People like a story. People like history. Naming a team because of the colors that the city identifies other sports teams with like the Senators is pathetic.
The majority rules. Where's the Poll?
Bad job by management. Awful job of marketing. Where's the research involved?
At least get the fans opinion before you make it official. They really embarrassed themselves.
I'm just giving my own opinion.

The name itself is just one piece of the final product. We're not up and running for a good year yet.

Crowd-sourcing has its own risks. Renegades was a product of that IIRC. Bleh. This is still private enterprise ultimately. I don't mind Hunt taking the reins on this decision.

Focus groups were commissioned though. This is what stuck. Management still has support for the name locally especially with former players like Tony Gabriel and Russ Jackson behind it.

I thought this was a decent explanation of the reasoning from Hunt himself: http://www.ottawasun.com/2013/06/08/...r-the-cfl-team. What did you find pathetic here?

It's great that the CFL is expanding and returning to Ottawa, but what a terrible name. My god. The RedBlacks? Seriously?
