A good net front prescence

This is something that we were really lacking. No body was wiling to take a beating infront of the net.
Who is available?
And please no washed up guys like Morrow.
Preferable someone who can play with sid/geno and not look out of place.

Ryan Clowe. He wants a 5 year, 25 million contract though. Not sure if he would be worth that to the Pens though.

He just needs to lose about 60 to play forward again.

I would be interested in Rj if columbus retained 1.5-2m of his salary. Penner would also be nice but how has he looked? I heard that before the cup last year he was really unmoitavted and didnt give it his all. Has he contniued his effort from last season?

Not going to happen. He has made it clear that he doesn't want to play forward. Plus, he's an All-Star Defenceman and was an ok forward who played a role in a cup run.

You don't want him if you want him to play forward.

Thomas Vanek is one of the best in the league and he could be available. I'm not sure Pittsburgh would want to pay what he'd cost though.

A big body and good net front presence? He wouldn't fit under the cap either.

You can try to get David Jones from the Avs, who are desperate trying to dump him. If Avs takes a part of his salaries for a decent prospect, that might work out. Players like Dupuis and Kunitz have revived their careers alongside of Crosby. It might happen with Jones too.

Thomas Vanek for nice things + a cap dump (to make it fit under the cap).
I don't think there's anybody in the league better at standing in front of the net and getting goals on deflections and rebounds than him.

Saying that the Avs are 'desperate' to get rid of him, is a bit of an exaggeration. I don't think there is any plan to get rid of him unless they can get decent value, which they won't. He'll stay an Avs for another year, and either bounce back or get bought out.

I dont think we can fit him under the cap unless you guys sign him for a 5-6 year deal for 7 mil then eat around 2 mil in cap, which isnt going to happen. O r atleast i dont think it will.

If you want a cheap-ish option, David Moss could certainly fill that role. 6'4" 210 lbs. Scored 8 PPGs one season with Calgary, though for some inexplicable reason the Yotes didn't really use him on the PP this season. :-/ Very versatile winger.

If this is interesting enough for the Pens, I'd think Jokinen for Moss would be a natural offer. Both have exactly the same salary next season ($2.1M)

No doubt in my mind that the Sabres would eat the max on Vanek if necessary to make a deal work if Vanek wants one.

So -- 1 year of Vanek at a touch over $3.5 million.

What's that worth to Pittsburgh?

You really want video proof? Anybody who's watched Vanek play knows how effective he is in front of the net. As others have already said I could see buffalo retaining salary to help Vanek fit on the penguins.

just watch him against Chara in any of the Buffalo/Boston games this year. A moot point. Vanek goes to Detroit to juice their pp and play LW for Pavel. lol

I think that's 45 goals. I haven't actually counted, but I'm gonna guess 20-25 of them were on deflections or rebounds, and that most were scored within 5-10ft of the goal.

Obligatory Tampa Bay fan offering Ryan Malone for a return to his hometown.

If there's interest in him (and he is a net front presence), a B defensive prospect or a 3rd would do it.
