It's Letang. Much better offensively, better defensively and he just got a Norris nomination. These poll results are ridiculous. Apparently one playoff series is enough to convince everyone that Letang is terrible.

No, he is not better defensively at all. And you say he is better offensively without taking into account the team he plays on. Yandle is a better hockey player than Letang. Letang is more physical.

Yandle is faster, has a better shot, more disciplined, works with less, is a leader on his team, and is better defensively.

Letang is more physical and has better hands as far as stick handling goes.

Says the Yotes fan. I've seen plenty of both and Letang is better - both offensively and defensively.

As to look at who he plays with - that's a valid argument two years ago when he stopped producing without Crosby & Malkin - the last two seasons he's put up great numbers whether Crosby was in the lineup or not.

I despise Letang but this thread is a travesty.

Yandle is a great point-producer but not at Letang's level in that regard.

Defensively, the gap is smaller but Letang still > Yandle. People underrate how much of a ****show Yandle is in his own zone.

Yet struggles in a 2nd pairing role to actually defend...

Letang has unreal skill level, but sometimes he can make junior level hazards. Guy is a ticking bomb every time hes out there, in a good way or in a bad way. Yandle is very good in all areas thats why i have to go with him. I also think he is very underrated, cause he is playing in a team like Phoenix. Put him in a big hockey city and he will get much more talk around him.

Flavor of the month, anyone?

About a month ago we had the defenseman rankings going, in which Letang ranked 10th and Yandle 17th. Yet Yandle is leading this poll comfortably. Just shows how these polls rarely show us anything

I bet that if this poll was before round 2, this poll would be dominated by Letang.

Yandle is no shutdown d-man and can make some pretty boneheaded gaffes in his own end from time to time, but I've never seen him utterly implode like Letang has defensively. He also has better stickwork. I would say Letang is capable of better defensive play in spurts, but also capable of far worse defensive play. Yandle is more consistently average.

Letang is more physical and a marginally better skater than Yandle, but he has both an inferior shot and inferior hockey sense. Plus Yandle is easily the most talented offensive player on a defense-first squad while Letang gets to work in a open system with all-world talent. And it's absolutely worth repeating that in the past 3 seasons, only one defenseman has put up more points than Yandle, and that's Karlsson.

Close, but Yandle.

Another one of those polls that shows HF's true lack of hockey knowledge.

I would choose Yandle.

I think Yandle is better offensively. He has a better shot and is smarter. Yandle puts up a lot of points on a team without much high end skill. I feel that Letang would struggle to score if he was on Phoenix instead of Pitt.

Neither are known for their defense, but I haven't seen Yandle completely melt down in the defensive zone like Letang has on numerous occasions.

That's pretty embarrassing for Yandle

Ahh, the ever present argument that he doesn't play the hard minutes. That argument makes no sense when we have players that are better defensively than Yandle, why put him out there when we could put OEL, z, Klesla, or Stone.

As to me being a Yotes fan and sticking up for Yandle, that has next to nothing to do with it. I have no problem fairly evaluating our players. It isn't like you would see me saying Yandle is better than PK or something crazy like that. But better than Letang? Absolutely.

Since 2009:

Yandle: 294 GP, 173 points, 0.59 PPG, 13 PPG, 43 PPA
Letang: 241 GP, 157 points, 0.65 PPG, 9 PPG, 48 PPA

(And for fun, Karlsson: 233 GP, 163 points, 0.70 PPG, 9 PPG, 48 PPA)

Their production looks pretty comparable to me. And that's before taking into consideration the difference in overall talent levels (like, orders of magnitude difference) and system play between Phoenix and Pittsburgh.

Try from 2010, and those numbers look a whole lot different.

Talk about picking and choosing. Challenge accepted:

Yandle: 212 GP, 32 G, 100 A, 132 points (2nd in the league among all defenseman in this period, BTW), 0.62 ppg, 5 PPG, 16 PPA

Letang: 168 GP, 23 G, 107 A, 130 points, 0.77 ppg, 5 PPG, 23 PPA

A 0.15 difference in ppg = 3 point difference over 20 games. Big whoop. Still pretty comparable (and elite) levels of production for defensemen. And again, this is before accounting for the fact that Letang gets to play with both Crosby and Malkin, while Yandle mostly has to play with grinders.
