Yah I'd be okay with that, would prefer your second option Courtier though.

I may be the only guy here who thinks that they shouldn't just put Alex Chiasson on the top line. Let him start off at 12-14 minutes a night and get his feet wet. I know they just threw him into it last season and it worked out well, I don't think that's a realistic expectation going forward.

My hope based on the current forwards:

Benn - Center - Eriksson
Cole - Center - Winger
Whitney - Eakin - Chiasson
Roussel - Fiddler - Smith
ex: Garbutt, MacDermid

I'm thinking the Stars should get the best linemates they can for Erik Cole to try and boost his value as much as possible for the trade deadline. After they dump Cole they can move Whitney and Chiasson up to the 2nd line if they like, and re-work the lines to get Eakin and Smith togather.

I think that the Fiddler line would actually be a decent depth scoring option for the Stars, much more effective than trying to use them as defensive stoppers anyway. Fiddler, Roussel, and Garbutt are great puck retrieval guys who will create a lot of space and chances for Reilly Smith, who needs to go back to basics before he can play any higher up the lineup.

Obviously there's a lot of holes in the top 6 as represented here, but Heika seems to think they'll be filling one of them with a trade involving a defenceman and from what Gonchar said in his interview the Stars are planning to make atleast a couple more additions. Like I said previously, one of the most important things is getting Erik Cole back on track so the Stars have the option of moving him for a good return at the deadline.

as for the defence, it's hard to speculate right now because it's so obvious that there are still major changes yet to come. I'd say pair Gonchar with Goligoski and give them the easy offensive zone starts to get the most out of their game, and keep Robidas with Dillon as the defensive horses. Whoever is still around out of Daley, Larsen, and Rome can combine with Jamie Oleksiak on the 3rd pairing (I'm thinking it will be Aaron Rome).

They weren't in order, just placed them randomly. I agree though I think I'd take Couturier first.

I'd love to bring Couturier to this team, but are we good trading partners with Philly? I suspect that they'd want a first line forward for him and we've already established that I'm not trading Loui.

EDIT: They apparently are also looking for a top 4 defenseman. However, I'm not willing to give up either Oleksiak or Dillon for him, which leaves them with Goligoski, Robidas, Daley, Larsen, Morrow and Nemeth as options. I'd be reluctant to give up Morrow, but you have to give to get. The question then becomes, will they see Morrow as the caliber of defenseman they're looking for and if not, how much more will we need to add?

Assuming we can land Elias and only Elias and no other youngsters sneak into the forward group:

Benn-Elias-Eriksson
Whitney-Eakin-Chaisson
Nystrom-Fiddler-Cole
Roussel-Garbutt-MacDermid

I'd be okay with this, but I'm hoping we end up with more depth this season than that.

Not sure if I see Elias as a 1st line center if we sign him this summer. He has all the traits to be a good center (playmaker, two-way ability), but is still more of a natural fit on the wing and isn't great on the draw.

One area that I'd really like to see us improve on is in the face-off circle. Winning face-offs are crucial for gaining possession, and they become more important in the playoffs. Granted, we'd actually have to make the playoffs first...

Why on earth do some of you want Richards after the way he performed towards the end of his time here and how he dicked over this team with his NTC? He didn't show anything in New York either that makes me want Richards back with two more years on his tires

Yea, I'm good with not having Richards. He's a bigger risk than Gonchar.

He was good with us for the entire time except that, who cares he pissed people off. This team will never be bad enough to truly be bad so who cares, we're adding a top line centre who played great in Dallas, and with Loui and Benn.

Richards was hurt and rushed back from an injury to try to help the Stars make the playoffs that year. You really can't blame him for his performance, nor the way things transpired when he left. He gave everything to this team and Nieuwendyk wouldn't give an inch.

I hold no ill feelings towards Richards. It's a business, and we were bankrupt. Get him back.

Eh, I'll retract my "Way too early" statement since I'm bored and can't sleep.

Trades/Signings
- Sign Valtteri Filppula, C; $18M over 4 Seasons
- Sign Viktor Stalberg, W; $10M over 3 Seasons
- Sign Anton Khudobin, G; $5M over 2 Seasons
- Re-sign Eric Nystrom, W: $5M over 3 Seasons
- Trade Alex Goligoski, D and 2013 2nd Round Selection (Dallas) for Sean Couturier, C
- Trade 2013 1st Round Selection (Dallas), 2013 1st Round Selection (Boston), Erik Cole, W and Trevor Daley, D for 2013 1st Round Selection (Carolina)
- Draft Elias Lindholm 5th Overall

Forwards
Jamie Benn - Sean Couturier - Loui Eriksson
Ray Whitney - Valtteri Filppula - Alex Chiasson
Viktor Stalberg - Cody Eakin - Antoine Roussel
Eric Nystrom - Vernon Fiddler - Lane MacDermid/Ryan Garbutt
Lane MacDermid/Ryan Garbutt

Defenders

Brenden Dillon - Stephane Robidas
Joe Morrow - Sergei Gonchar
Cameron Gaunce - Philip Larsen
Aaron Rome

Goaltenders

Kari Lehtonen
Anton Khudobin

Go ahead and criticize it, but this is what I want to see happen. Lindholm - Couturier - Eakin down the middle would prove to be elite center depth within 5 years.

If it costs that much to move up to 5th overall, it really isn't worth it. I gather our pick, Daley and maybe just a little bit more (mid round pick) would likely be enough to move from 10 to 5.

As much as I'd love to see Couturier in Dallas, I don't think Goligoski and a 2nd is enough to bring him here. Perhaps Goligoski and Boston's 1st will be enough though.

Carolina is pressed up against their internal budget already, they can't take on that much salary.

It's really way too early to do these, especially at forward where there is more holes. However the defense has less holes so I'll throw something out for that.

Goligoski-Dillon
Gonchar-Larsen
Connauton-Robidas/Daley/Gaunce/UFA defensive D-man
Rome/Gaunce

This would obviously be contingent on moving one of Daley or Robidas (or both) and gives each pair somewhat of a different type of player (ie veteran vs younger, bigger vs smaller, and offensive vs defensive). Is it great? Hell no, these things can't change overnight. It takes time to develop players.

How about Rob Scuderi?

reliable defensive top 4 guy to occupy a top forward line.

Get rid of robidas and put scuderi with young Dillon

And the 5 mill meme chugs on.

Seriously though, you're probably right. I'm thinking more like 4.5 though. Anything more than that and I take my chances with Eakin as 2C.

Also the mod in me is dying at the fact we have 3 threads going for offseason acquisition speculation. Damn you all.

Looking at this thread makes me want to put on my NHL13 goggles; how does that 2014 draft look?

This Draft: Ristolainen (10th), Erne (if we move up a bit or if he drops)
Next Draft: Sam Reinhart (1st overall )

2016-2017 roster:

Eriksson - S.Reinhart - Benn
Erne - Faksa - Chiasson
Stransky - Eakin - Ritchie
Roussel - Shore - MacDermid

Oleksiak - Ristolainen
Dillon - Morrow
Connauton - Goligoski
Nemeth

That would be a sweet second line to have in the future, just crash the net
