Franchise Player Poll: #11 Detroit

1) You are voting for the franchise player who will receive a 4 year, 24 million dollar "franchise player" contract. Everyone else will be a UFA, including prospects so who you don't vote for will be on sale to the highest bidder. This WILL NOT count against the cap and the player can not be traded.

2) Player will play all 82 games for that 4 year span and goalies will start 65+ games a season. Basically the player will be immune to injury for 4 years.

Anaheim: JS Giguere (49%)
Atlanta: Ilya Kovalchuk (64%)
Boston: Joe Thornton (95%)
Buffalo: Thomas Vanek (40%)
Calgary: Jarome Iginla (92%)
Carolina: Eric Staal (81%)
Chicago: Tuomo Ruutu (92%)
Colorado: Peter Forsberg (48%)
Columbus: Rick Nash (89%)
Dallas: Marty Turco (57%)

Pavel Datsyuk. As for the prospect go you should of put Howard instead of Hudler.

I really think Yzerman is still the franchise player though

yzerman will always be the franchise player, but the player you need to start to build around in the near future in zetterberg IMHO. Lidstrom will be gone in a few years, therefore i didnt vote him

Extremely tough call between Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Lidstrom is the best player currently (hence he's leading the vote), but he's 35 and a 4 year contract will take him to 39, an age where he won't even be the best D-man on Detroit. Datsyuk is more skilled offensively, but less skilled defensively IMO. The tie-breaker goes to leadership, where IMO Zetts seems to have the edge right now.

On a related note, it seems that for a lot of these polls on current NHL stars, several posters are evaluating players based largely on the 2003-2004 season, discounting the fact that a whole year has passed, and just like young players often develop, older players often regress.

That's doubtful. The only guy I can see on the Wings roster that would be better than a 39-year old Lidstrom in a few years is Kronwall, and that is not likely IMO.

Yzerman is not the franchise player, and hasn't been for several years. He really ought to retire now because he's getting more and more like Messier by the year and that's not the way I want to see him go out.

I don't see d-man on the Wings being better than a 39-year old Lidstrom. It's not like he is physically deteriorating or anything either.

It's very close, but I'd take a 28 year old Kronwall over a 39 year old Lidstrom. Now mind you they're FAR apart right now, but one player's development plus another player's regression will erase the gap in 4 years, just my opinion.

Pavel Datsyuk

Lindstrom is great right now, but like Cruiser008 said I don't want to give a 35 year old player a 4 year contract

hesitated a lot between datsyuk and lidstrom

Hard to know if Lidstrom will still be great in 3-4 years, but he still got my vote.

Just a note on upper-30's defensemen that have had big years in the past few seasons. Macinnis, Stevens, Chelios, Bourque have all had Norris caliber seasons beyond 38, IIRC. No reason Lidstrom can't do the same especially with his style of play. He's healthy and efficient.

And yes Lidstrom is the franchise. I've always put it like this. Stevie is the heart and soul of the Red Wings. Nick is the backbone/cornerstone of the team.

You do have a point there... motivation is also a factor (Lidstrom hasn't played for a year, and has done it all.... 3 cups, etc...). Tough to say really.

That only plays itself out in two different ways. Either he plays and plays all out or he goes home to Sweden. I don't see a middle ground with him. He has too much pride and competitive drive towards perfection to just half-ass it.

The reasons he isnt in the poll (not that you're asking, but I've seen a few list his name and this is a good quote for my point) is A) I don't see many people voting for him as opposed to the other 3 forwards because of his age and B)I'm not sure if he's going to retire or not which is the main reason he isn't in the poll.

Very, very tough choice between Datsyuk and Lidstrom. I ended up voting Datsyuk because I believe that he will be able to develop the ability to totally change games. Still, I'm not entirely sure about voting against Lidstrom, ever.

I went for Lidstrom, as I believe he still has enough in the tank to be an elite, top-10 defenceman for a few more years. Not sure about Datsyuk's durability or toughness, either, although the guy has sickening skill.

By the way, putting Lang up there ahead of Yzerman, until Yzerman retires, is a big mistake. Ask Detroit who is more of their franchise player as long as Yzerman is there.

Finally a really tough one. Toss up between Lidström and Datsuyk, but I went with the latter one.

agreed. Lidstrom will be the best defnsemen for the wings until the day he retires... hes a bourque, he wont slow down but it'll just be his age

Here's another point: consider the 4-year, 24 million dollar deal aspect. Even if Lidstrom does slow down towards the end he's probably still worth that sort of money, and for the first couple of years you are getting him at practically half price.
