Yep... I really like Allaire, he seems to have done a great job here as goalie coach.

Alright guys enough mindless speculation abut the 1994 Cup team. People, like myself come on this board looking for information and when there are 3 new pages of nothing but jokes it makes it hard to decipher where the real info is.

I know I'm in the minority (or perhaps the silent majority), but I trust Sather. Every time I thought he was trapping the Rangers in cap space hell, he found a way out, including getting McDonagh out of it. Most of the trades he made have been winners. His drafting, since the cap was implemented, has been very solid if not terrific.

I don't think he would fire Torts without a solid plan of one or more coaches he wants, and how to get each. Of course there are things out of his control like if a particular coach actually wants to coach here. And Sather has balls he will make a gamble if, for example his number one choice for coach is under contract and can't be spoken to. But I trust he won't be caught at the end of the day without one of this top three selections for coach.

My gut feeling is that Tippet is his number one choice, as he is mine, and this will just have to take a while.

That's one instance. If I actually thought that getting McDonagh was part of his master plan when he signed Gomez, I might look at it differently but we all know that wasn't. He's been amazingly fortunate that there have been buyouts and amnesties. He's fixed his mistakes but he seems incapable of not making the mistake in the first place.

Better than his UFA singings that's for sure.

It's been better. The bar was pretty low. It is a condemnation of his drafting that the Rangers had little depth after the Nash trade and had no one internally who could play on the fourth line which has been a revolving door of marginal grinders and aging goons. It's been over a decade and they still can't consistently reach down to the minors to fill needs.

You're assuing that Sather entered this offseason with the idea that he was going to fire Torts. I'm not sure that was the case.

He needs more brains, less balls.

Of course not, Mark Messier is waiting in the wings.

Most college HC contracts provide the out for an NHL gig.

More than likely they wouldn't stand in his way if the offer came down the pike.

How do you guys know so much about coaches? I'm so lost on this matter. I guess in this day and age I can google each guy and make an novice assesment to which is best for the Rangers.
Anyways, is anyone else worried the Rangers are going to lose Gorton? I heard mixed things about his future in NYC. For the people who know this, are the Rangers going to lock him down with the organization? He's done a lot of good for the team and I'd hate to see him leave. Am I concerned for no reason?

He's being groomed for the GM position. If he gets spurned and Sather appoints Messier to the position, I see no reason why Gorton would stay with us.

Everything I've read says Gorton is the probable successor to Sather

it would be nice to get an outside the box coach, someone who could reinvent the game a bit...like this guy...

The drafting issue is an interesting one. By 2005, there was nowhere to go but up. The team was coming off drafting Jessiman in one of the best drafts ever, and Montoya with the #6 overall in 2004 -- although that draft did contain Dubinsky and Callahan in the later rounds.

Drafting guys like those 2, Staal, Anisimov, Del Zotto, Stepan, Hagelin, etc has been nice. But at that point does it become redundant? These are good to very good players that can fill the middle of a lineup nicely.

But the fact remains, the Rangers haven't drafted a top line elite level forward in forever. They havent drafted a guy that can effectively run a powerplay. They havent drafted and developed younger players that can fill roles at the lower end of the lineup. There was a time where drafting 2nd/3rd line tweener types was acceptable - we were just happy to draft players and get them into the NHL after the lockout. But now, if the expectation is to make a championship run, I just dont see much diversity on the player we've drafted. More often that not, the team is still forced to go outside the organization.
