People need to stop putting faith in Rossi's "sources". By saying that Shero wants Bylsma as his coach, he covers his bases no matter what happens tomorrow. If Bylsma stays, then Rossi reported it first; if he's fired, ownership overruled Shero. I'm not sure why if he actually had a source who knew what went on in those meetings, he would only have one side of the story.

I really feel if Bylsma was going to be fired, it would of happened by now or been leaked.

To me there is a better chance of the Pirates ending season over .500 than Dan getting fired.

You also can't discredit Rossi just for being Rossi. There's a lot of reasons to think Shero would want Bylsma back for next season.

Either way. If Bylsma is back I'm done with this team till he's gone. I can't be invested in this team anymore with him as the coach. Too much frustration. Too much disappointment. Zero reason to get excited even with Crosby and Malkin. It's all regular season success anyway.

I'm just waiting to hear the word, just like Kirk said "not worth your time when you know what the outcome will be"

With a new coach, the Playoffs could actually be something we look forward too...

At least we have two new video game consoles coming out in Nov, either way I'll have plenty of options to avoid the DB's Dummies.

Speaking of the new consoles comeing out, any chance NHL 2014 has trade your coach feature?

trade your coach? please, i'm still waiting for that Lockout mode. EA Sports is, once again, sleeping at the wheel.

We can pretend the playoffs don't exist and just root for Crosby/Malkin to win all the individual awards every year.

What the hell kind of organization rewards this failure with an extension?
crosby and malkin going down a few years ago cost the pens not only that season but this season by allowing bylsma to be forgiven for that lightning series debacle.

I'm still holding out hope. If Rossi is good at anything it's putting out safe statements in which he doesn't look bad either way.

I didn't expect any kind of success from that year, but blowing a 3-1 lead is inexcusable.

Especially when it's put into the perspective that in each of our last three losing series we've lost at least 3 games in a row

I'm only reassured by the fact that Rossi was completely adamant that Therrien's job was not in the least amount of danger.

He kept beating that drum until literally hours before Therrien was fired, then he threw a massive hissy fit.

Agreed.

Call me a bad fan or whatever, I don't really care at this point. I'm not investing (and yes, investing is the right word considering the time, energy and even money I put towards following/cheering for the Pens) myself in this team when I know what the result will be come playoff time.

More than that, I simply can't take Bylsma's coaching lineup decisions any longer. I don't have the energy to follow the team for 82 games, only to be frustrated every time I see his lineup card. It's simply not fun anymore following this team with him as the coach. He literally turned what should have been an all-star lineup into a "Wtf? Are you kidding me with these lines?" every single time I saw his lineups.

There's also the fact that keeping Bylsma (or worse, offering him an extension) sends the message that they really don't care about playoff results. No team that has suffered through 4 straight disappointing playoffs would keep the same guy behind the bench who lead the team to all 4 of those results. What's the excuse going to be? "Next year, we just have to get to our game"?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I bet Shero, etc. haven't decided yet. Probably take the evening to think about things then decide in the morning.

Either way is a win / win for me at this point : )

Think I just pick another team to love and cheer for. Cause the Pens will be as dead to me as the Pirates are.
How can someone just go pick another team to cheer for?? maybe it's just me but no way i could just stop cheering for the team i grew up watching no matter the circumstance.

Yeah, honestly, I'll be pissed if Bylsma is retained, but I've watched this team through way worse.

Agreed. I just can't root for another team at this point. Even if I know the inevitable playoff failure is imminent, that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the regular season. Would people rather go back to the ****ing X-Generation days?

And they will of course conduct interviews and that sort of thing, but I think it'll come down to a coach's body of work in the past and how likely they are to have success with *this* team right now. Anybody can interview well. That's how Olczyk got the head coaching job.

Tortorella: He has the best resume of the bunch. A Cup, A Jack Adams, 2 more nominations. He teaches accountability but doesn't stifle elite offensive players. His negatives are that he probably has a short shelf-life as a coach because of his abrasiveness and his other antics.. and his negative comments about the Penguins organization might hurt his stance not only with our management but with certain players in the room.

Ruff: Probably the safest pick in the bunch. He doesn't have Torts' resume but he doesn't come with any baggage either. He's just a solid coach. He's won the Jack Adams once and been to the Finals once. His teams aren't purely run and gun and they aren't purely trap teams either, they're hybrids and they can play multiple styles and win many different ways. He seems like a good mix between a straight ball-buster and a player-friendly guy. His lack of success with a loaded Buffalo team that finally went out and spent to the cap is a concern though.

Maurice: Not the best of the bunch as far as past success but he might have an edge in that he already has an idea of what buttons to push with Malkin.. and he's also coached Jokinen and Adams previously. His teams tend to be pretty tough defensively if nothing else. He went to the Finals once in 02.

Boucher: The weakest choice of the bunch IMO. Too inexperienced prior to coming to the NHL and I think that while Tampa Bay isn't exactly a great roster they still probably underachieved the last 2 seasons under him. And while I don't care what system the team employs as long as it works, the 1-3-1 is in my opinion ineffective.

So I think with that you narrow it down to Tortorella and Ruff... And go either with the higher-risk higher-reward Torts or the safer Ruff.
I would go with Ruff or Boucher. I always liked Ruff, I think he is a good coach. His problem in Buffalo in the end was, he was just there way too long.

An Boucher is a great tactician and I think that's what this teams needs. He wasn't the problem in Tampa. They got a new coach and nothing changed. He was also an overtime goal away from the cup finals two years ago.

I hate Torts and Maurice, I don't know, I just like the other two better.

Jesus I hope Mario comes to his senses and ends this.

While I don't think that it's as contrived as this, I'm starting to think there is some truth there. Ray Shero knows that another hardline-coach isn't going to work. Not with these players. It's almost like he's being forced to have a player-friendly coach with the nucleus he has. I don't envy him one way or another.

we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the Boucher/Crosby connection.

Quote:
New Lightning coach Guy Boucher has a pretty powerful ally in Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby, who said Boucher has "a great mind for the game."

The two worked together during the 2004-05 season, when Crosby played juniors for Rimouski of the Quebec league and Boucher was an assistant.

"I took a lot of things from him," Crosby recently told the St. Petersburg Times. "Probably the biggest thing was off the ice. There was an open line of communication there."

"He was able to do a lot of things that some coaches can teach, but he actually can do them," Crosby said. "It's good to have somebody who is able to do that. He was an offensive forward, and I enjoyed that."

We can only hope that Mario wants Bylsma gone, if not we will be stuck with him for another Play-Off exit next year......

I am pretty sure they are discussing that topic and I sure hope the right decision will come out of that discussion! What this team needs is a coach that can teach them structure.

the master plan might be that shero wants to wait for the rangers position to be filled. make no doubt blysma would be snatched up quickly if he hits the market. I want him gone, just sayin

If they keep Bylsma there's no way I'd root for another team. But my hopes and expectations for this team would be greatly diminished until he's gone. At least when the Pens sucked, you didn't have the talent there dangling like a carrot on a stick.

But when there's generational talent being wasted, that's actually more frustrating and infuriating to me than if the team flat out sucked.

If the Pens were suffering losses where they went down swinging and weren't so embarrassing, then I probably wouldn't feel the way I do. I surely don't expect a Cup every year. But it's the unhinged way they're losing to any respectable playoff team that I find so alarming. I've had enough of the meltdowns only to see his smug face telling us they just didn't "get to their game." Enough already.
