HIIT workout?

HIIT workout?

Could HIIT, otherwise known as High Intensity Interval Training, be the best workout for a hockey player? HIIT, along with eating right, could burn a lot of body fat while having extreme cardio. Has anyone else tried this?

I'm doing insanity which is pretty much hiit and I can feel my stamina already getting better after a week

HIIT is great for many reasons:

- Tends to increase endurance (more specifcally, VO2 max aka lung capacity) quicker.

- Tends to increase explosiveness and effort in short intervals (beneficial for hockey shifts and skating in general).

- Tends to build/maintain lower body/core strength better than lower intensity cardio.

- Reportedly has a greater impact on metabolism, effectively 'shocking' the body into burning more calories over the next given period of time AKA if your diet is what it should be, you should burn more fat.

- HIIT workouts tend to be shorter time-wise compared to lower intensity cardio (though it might feel like longer because it's not easy).

Definitely... but I would also include some plyometrics (box jumps, squad jumps, lateral jumps, etc) and also some weight training.

Yes to all. HIIT is great for hockey because it mimics the movement of what you would experience in a hockey game, along with the energy used and speed needed.

It should be the main dish to your work outs.
Yet! The great Antoli Tarasov (The Father of Soviet Hockey) believed in Cross fitness. Yes plyometrics and HIIT were his main dish but they were followed by some other forms of fitness as well because he believed athletes should be well rounded. So it would not hurt you to go for a light 3-mile-5-mile jog. Or a 5-10 mile bike ride. Some split work outs. All this could be your side dishes to your main course.

He had them play soccer throughout the year. The two sports are very much different. One involves more aerobic work where the other focuses more on aerobic activity. Yet to play some soccer or other sports allows your body to work on things that it normally wouldnt in hockey or hockey specific training
