Pick your Poison (MAF versus Bylsma)

You are GM and the owners tell you that one will stay and one must go. Who do you bring back and why?

I think they will get rid of Bylsma and keep MAF. Just for the sheer fact they're kind of stuck with MAF unless someone offers a good deal and wants to take on his contract.

Not happening with MAF. People thinking they'll get Bernier or Luongo or have one of the AHL guys backup Vokoun are crazy.

Fire DB, Keep Fleury. Fleury has the chance to bounce back if the new coach has the ability to actually teach players how to play in their own zone. Worst case scenario, you buyout Fleury before the next season when Malkin and Letang's contract extensions kick in.

In an ideal world, they can both.

If you can Disco Dan then any competent coach will bench MAF anyway. Would be nice to save some of the cap space though...

Keep Fleury, he's the lesser evil and easier to compartmentalize.

Get rid of him at the soonest convenience.

at least there's a chance that if you fire Granato and Reirden and replace them with stellar assistants Bylsma's flaws could be mitigated. i find it hard to believe that a MAF redemption story is possible.

Just the history and the system DB has put in place hasn't had the results they needed. Got away from earning your ice the way it's meant to be and turned the Pittsburgh Penguins into the Lazyburgh Penguins relying on the stretch pass too much. Add to it, not having a plan B when it gets exposed.

As I said in the other thread. The team needs to be built and coached to beat the Devils and the trap consistently. If they did that everything else would fall into place. If Kovalchuk can play in that system Malkin and Crosby can learn to do it as well.

very good point BTW. That cap space is worthless when a coach doesn't play his best players. I was defending Bylsma in the beginning of this season, but his inability to judge players far outweighs his sound coaching concepts (although with a total lack of execution of those).

He needs to go and replaced with a true disciplinarian that isn't afraid to call out star players (cough Crosby) for lack of leadership by example.

Option 4 was pretty tempting, and while choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil, I'd keep Flower over Bylsma.

A couple of reasons. As has been pointed out, who would take his spot? There's no one available who would necessarily be better, and the only guy on the depth chart with any NHL experience is Theissen. Better to keep him, give the AHL guys some playing time, see who might be on the horizon.

Also pointed out, a better coach won't be afraid to bench him.

There's also the possibility that a new coach and new system would make a difference. Maybe insulate him a bit, maybe rebuild some confidence. Being a dad might steady him a bit, too. Hard to say how that will play out.

His cap hit will make things tight this season, but we'd still have the option to buy him out next summer. And who knows, maybe he'll either get his **** together or at least raise his trade value so a buy-out won't be required.

Bylsma pounds square pegs into circle holes. Sometimes it works simply because we have two of best players in the world in the line up (for now). And I'm not convinced that isn't directly related to why MAF has such bad games in the playoffs, against teams that won't simple roll over let and Bylsma pound in their circle-hole with a square peg

IF had to choose one, let Bylsma go and give MAF another shot.

In this situation, I bring back Bylsma and get rid of Fleury. Could make the argument that you retain Fleury and just sit his ass, but then you still might run into a situation that you lose someone important because the backup goaltender's cap hit is 5-10 times what it should be.

I'd rather have Bylsma. He doesn't count against the cap while killing us.

I'm hoping that Meloche's retirement leads to a turn around for fleury.

I am done with Bile(sma). MAF can still win 40 regular season games for his team, he just needs another goalie to take over in the post season.

That said, how about trading him straight up for Ryan Miller?

you have the man who has given up the most goals against in history. on one hand, this should be good, he can tell MAF about all the possible ways one can be scored on. on the other hand, i'm starting to believe that MAF has made it his mission to give up goals that Meloche has never seen for the sheer lolz.

I chose to resign. But if someone put a gun to my head and I were forced to decide...I'll take the coach because there's no salary-cap issue there.

Besides, all coaches are hired to be fired so it would simply be postponing the inevitable. But we need that $5 million cap hit to disappear.

That's too much money, Miller makes a good amount more than Fleury.
