I would have liked to have Streit back, but Visnovsky is just as good offensively, and better defensively. The Islanders are better off replacing Streit with a defense first type defenseman that can play on the right side.

Source indicates Streit "likely" to sign with Flyers, but Philly needs to shed salary first. Have to wait til buyout window opens. #Isles

Isn't the buyout window open the day after the Finals end? If so, Briere and Bryz being bought out will certainly alleviate a lot of the cap concern for next year. Meszaros is a likely trade candidate as well, which would be nice.

Except they have. The Flyers defensive problems stemmed from Pronger getting injured. Since then they have acquired schenn, streit, grossmann, and some depth defenders. Along with drafting gostisbhere. Not to mention their attempts at signing weber, hamhuis, etc.

Amnestying Bryz and Briere, along with a cap dump trade of Meszaros would free up a little over $16M in cap space.

Then Pronger can go on LTIR.

Thing is ,Pronger was never replaced. That's why they allow that much goals.

Holmgren keeps trying to patch the D, over and over again but the big hole left by Pronger's absence will remain for years to come.

They will be a better team without him. Offensively his role is filled by Visnovsky. Defensively, several of their D prospects will be an improvement. Leadership, Tavares will get the C and has been de facto captain anyway. This is a conscious decision by the Islanders not to overpay for an aging player starting to show signs of decline.

Why do people insist on bring up the players the Flyers need to sign like they are all superstars? It's pretty much agreed upon that Read will not be resigned and will most likely be traded before next July. The only player they need to resign that is going to demand a big raise is Giroux.

Giroux ($3.75m)- Large raise upwards of $3.5-$4m more. <$4m raise.
Schenn ($3.1m)- Hasn't played a full NHL season yet. Was on pace for 15 goals and 45 points this year. How can he demand much of a raise? He's a RFA so I would expect something similar to Giroux's contract. Either way, no way he gets more than $4m if they can get him resigned by early next season. <$1m raise.
Couturier- ($1.4m)What numbers has he put up to make anyone think he's going to demand anything more than Schenn is currently making. Even if he has a better season this year, he's probably not getting more than $3m unless he really breaks out. 1.5m raise.

So with those 3 guys, thats $6.5m that will be used. Buy out Briere who makes exactly that much and start working with those 3 on their contracts right away.

Yeah, good luck figuring all that out with any sort of certainty.
- 99.99% chance he never plays again.
-Unless Kimmo takes a large pay cut (<$4m) he'll be gone. Mez will be gone unless he plays 80+ games this season
- $7m+ per year long term. They'll probably have him resigned before the 20 game mark next season.
- Schenn, No more than $4m. Couts, no more than $3m. both will probably be signed during next season
- He's a backup for now. If he wins the spot, great, but nobody is penciling him into the starting role.

Those aren't tough question marks to answer.

I think all Flyers fans know that having majority defensive defensemen doesn't work. It doesn't really matter how good or bad Streit is defensively, he will be a huge upgrade because he can move the puck and take the pressure off, and that's something non-Philly fans aren't realizing.

The bigger issue for the Flyers IMO is their identity. They need to choose if they want to play old-school Flyers hockey or if they want the entertaining style of hockey. Until that happens, they will just keep adding random band-aids.
The fact that they kept Laviolette should be all the indication you need that they want to keep playing the agressive forecheck system.

Just talked to Mark Streit. Sure sounds like a guy who wants to play for the #Flyers and not hit free agency: http://flyers.nhl.com/club/blogpost.htm?id=18389 … #NHL

It's 48 hours after the finals end, as reported by Bob McKenzie.

Could see Anaheim/NYI/Carolina having interest in Mesz.

I think a conditional 2nd would be fair; it's a 2nd if he plays 60+ games, otherwise it's a 3rd.

Or something like that. Defenseman are always a premium.

So like I said. Why haven't they found good defensive help?

Are some people in this thread a little confused? Timonen isn't a free agent. He is signed for 1 more year. He will then, most likely, retire.

Considering how Philly fans talk about him, why would anyone want him, especially after major surgery.

When he's healthy, he's good. Problem is, he's been about as heathly as Chris Pronger lately.

What the fans say is irrelevant. Meszaros has been a good top-4 D in the past, and he only has one year left on his contract. I would be surprised if there wasn't someone out there, a cap floor team, most likely, willing to take a gamble on him.

Carolina makes too much sense. They desperately need proven D.

Players off of major surgery usually do not fetch much, that being said a conditional 2nd round pick based on games played might work. Maybe a 2nd or 3rd if he plays 60+ and a 5-6th otherwise.

Very good chance he is never the same after rotator cuff surgery. Hard for him to be that physical with a messed up shoulder.

don't think this makes them better. Yes they have Streit but will lose Breier, Bryz and Mez reminds me of last year when they got Schenn but lost Jagr, JVR Carle and Bob.

People quickly forget that the Flyers top 6 missed 33% of their games last year...and that is not including Pronger in that number. And then all of the replacements got hurt too...going thru 13 D-men!

Are the Flyers better today than yesterday? If they sign him, yes!

LOL! Streit isn't anywhere as good as Bruno Gervais. Let's keep trotting him out there.

None of the three you listed were important pieces of the team last season.
