Marc-Andre Fleury is Going Nowhere

In case you were wondering, the chances of Marc-Andre Fleury not being a Pittsburgh Penguin next year are pretty minimal. When he gave way to Tomas Vokoun in the playoffs, many were speculating that Fleury would not be with the Pens next season.

First, Dan Bylsma weighed in
Quote:
"He's our No. 1 goalie for this franchise and he will be going forward."
https://twitter.com/penguins/status/343782792854908928

Then, today, GM Ray Shero added his endorsement
Quote:
Shero said he believes Fleury can get back to the type of post-season performances he put forth in 2008 and 2009, while the veteran Vokoun is comfortable carrying the load or serving as backup.

"It's difficult to replace 40 wins a year from Marc-Andre Fleury, I can't replace that," said Shero.
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/...ma-malkin.html
Shero also added something along the lines of Fleury being their man "As long as he wanted to return" which could be read as Fleury being unhappy, but Fleury put those rumors to bed quickly.

per Renaud Lavoie
Quote:
Allan Walsh on his client Marc-André Fleury: "Marc-Andre Fleury is a Pittsburgh Penguin, he loves the club, the city, his teammates...
Quote:
...and the fans. Marc-André does not want to be anywhere else."-Allan Walsh.
So, we can likely now put any Fleury trade proposals to bed now, unless Ray Shero pulls a Craig MacTavish on him!

Well something will have to give in Pittsburgh. They need to make changes and they have a bunch of people to re-sign in the next 2 years.

Hope Vokoun gets enough rest in the regular season to carry the load when it matters, then...

Shero and Bylsma believe that he can become his former self again with a new goalie coach. That's why they removed Meloche from that spot.

Next, let's stop all of these Malkin threads. Make it happen Shero.

Using wins to gauge how good a goalie is

That's like using a pitchers win/loss record in baseball.

Orpik and Niskanen are going to be gone, Pens have the D prospects to replace them. I wouldn't be surprised with an opening night D group of:

Letang-Despres
Dumoulin-Martin
Niskanen-Bortuzzo

next year and

Letang-Despres
Dumoulin-Martin
Harrington-Bortuzzo

the year after. Pens are going to slowly be weeding out their older D.

Pretty stupid decision, if indeed true. I don't really care one way or the other though, so good luck next year Pit!

Hogwash. Give me some pads, and I could probably get 40 wins a year behind that team.

Yeah, ok, slight over-exaggeration, but even Fleury's regular season stats are average at best.

Just replace the name Fleury with Cloutier and you have a Brian Burke comment from a few years back.

Why, they replace Orpik with Dumoulin next year (not that big of a loss, Orpik's wheels were falling off this year), and Niskanen with Harrington in 2 years (which is a huge plus). I don't know what you're getting at.

Does the NHL have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome insurance?

Bunch of rookies and young players in a system that isn't suited to put them in the best position to succeed is a recipe to the lit up.

I can't imagine that there would be much interest in Fleury at this point unless Pitts ate soem of his salary. Probably best to hang onto him and see if he can resurrect his game.

WBS runs the same system as the Pens, so they won't be put in a new system entirely. Dumoulin was excellent at WBS this year, and Harrington is one of the best D in the CHL this year. There will obviously be bumps in the road, as there are with every rookie, but I think the Pens can manage.

If they can't manage with veteran D what makes you think they can with a bunch of rookies on the blue line?

Same system doesn't matter, it's the NHL and it's a system that is not good for defensemen, especially young ones. It's why they let in a ton of goals in the playoffs, and it will only get worse with multiple young players in the lineup.

What do you mean "can't manage"? They weren't bad defensively at all during the playoffs or the end of the season. They didn't lose because of bad D, they lost because they couldn't score.

This coming from the same team that nominated Matt Cooke for the Masterton.
