Let Filppula walk, Go after David Clarkson?

David Clarkson (IMO) would be a perfect fit for this Detroit team. Brings a physical presence with the ability to put up 35 goals. Us Red Wing's fans have seen how frustrating Valtteri Filppula can be. He has no consistency with his game.

Filppula will probably be asking for $5 million this summer. Clarkson will probably be in the range of $5-$6 million.

If the Red Wings sense they have a shot at signing Clarkson, should we let Filppula walk and go after Clarkson?

Cap also drops to $64.3 million next year and there's no way signing both would be likely, seeing that we need to resign Datsyuk, Brunner, Nyquist, Andersson, DeKeyser to new deals soon.

I think if Holland senses he can get Clarkson, he should go for it.

What do you guys think?

If Clarkson is able to get $6mm on the open market the Wings will let him walk. Maybe 5mm is the max.

The price have to be right. I would overpay for Nathan Horton because he is real talent, but someone like Clarkson, I would pay only real value. He is a late bloomer and usually they also lose their prime pretty soon.

Horton +5 million
Clarkson +4 million
Penner +3 million

Agreed Clarkson would be sweet for the right price maybe between $4.5m-$5.0m a year so would either Horton or Weiss do the trick, Weiss could get alos between $4.5m-$5.0m a year and Horton any where from $5.0m-
$6.0m and the cap is going to right back where it was for the 2011-12 season around $63.3m.

I meant to say $64.3 not $63.3 for this seasons cap.

not for me. i don't want filppula at 5mil, but i wouldnt want clarkson at a similar price either. one 30-goal season (no 20-goal seasons, btw - though admittedly if this season wasn't shortened you'd imagine he'd hit 20 this year), best of 46 points and usually a minus player.
flip had a poor year this season, but last year he produced better than clarkson will ever manage, he was a key part of the 08 and 09 teams and he's a centre. for me, i'd have filppula over clarkson every time on the same contract terms.
nathan horton, on the other hand, might be worth a risk.

Clarkson makes too much now. He's going to get ridiculous money and not follow through; it will be a Gomez/Drury signing in that he was never worth the contract he signed (as opposed to a Redden signing where he was a top defenseman who was coming off a down year, and in his second year with NYR was effectively semi-benched by Torts because his play style "didn't fit").

I'd rather Horton if the money is similar, and I'd rather Weiss because he'll be cheaper. Weiss+Filppula is a realistic option that can actually happen and make this team better in the now and future. Clowe is another option who is likely cheaper and will likely be better going forward.

No. Holland should not drop $5.5m+ on a one-season fluke who hasn't shown any signs of offensive life otherwise. Even Filppula has had better offensive success outside of their respective best years. Hudler beats him. Clarkson is not an offensive force; he's a physical guy who managed to pull off a surprisingly good year. He's Terry O'Reilly, not Cam Neely or Brendan Shanahan.

Not real high on paying either of these guys 5 million. One thing I do know is when Clarkson stops scoring he is at least still doing stuff, Filppula is a ghost.

I've wanted Clarkson for a long time and was hoping we could deal for him. Now that he is a free agent and the amount Gm's are going to give the guy I want nothing to do with.

Clarkson for 3.5 - 4.5 is a great deal.
Clarkson for 5 -6 is a terrible deal.

Its crazy how half a million per year can be the difference between a great deal and a terrible one

Definitely let Flipper walk. You would probably get Brian Boitano to cross the blue line and pirouette every time for less than a million.

My thoughts exactly, even if Clarkson isn't scoring, he's going to hit and fight. Filppula just disappears unless he's scoring

I want Horton. I am fine giving him $5 million/year.

Keep in mind New Jersey has been very vocal about bringing Clarkson back. Lots of time for them to work out a deal. Clarkson also likes NJ:
“I love playing here. My daughter is from here. I’ve loved my time here,” Clarkson pointed out. “What better situation could there be? I have a coach (Pete DeBoer) I’ve had since I was young who I believe, besides my father, has been the biggest part of my hockey career. And Mr. Lamoriello was the first GM to give me an opportunity.”

My gut tells me they work it out.

People who want Clarkson at anywhere close to 5 mil long-term really, really need to watch him more imo.

Career year last year, started this year with hot streak and then scored like 5 goals in his last 28 games or something like that.

Horton also can disappear for long stretches during the regular season. I wouldn't gamble on Horton coming here if it ment losing Filpulla for good

I would prefer to go for Clowe at 4-5 mil/year on a 3 year deal than either Clarkson or Horton. While Horton's a good player with size, he's far from a physical presence, is very injury-prone and can't really drop the gloves if we need him to (or at least he shouldn't be).

Clarkson wont get $6m maybe $5m at the very most and that's overpaying for him.

No way. I'd prefer Horton, Penner, Macaurther and maybe Clowe all over Clarkson.

I prefer most of those over Filppula. I think Nyquist fills his role decently and then we can upgrade our size instead of having another undersized forward.

Agreed Clarkson like Fil had 1 good season and that's all, Because free agency is pretty bad this year they will both get overpaid big time.

Big risk though for someone with concussion issues though.
