Exactly. Why would he care if his clothes got wet if he didn't plan on coming out of the river? Doesn't make a ton of sense on the surface.

This is terrible. I feel for his family.

I think the Journal is making an assumption, but part of it is likely because he was unavailable for 3 days. Either he was out partying with some friends or else he didn't want to be contacted.

Edit: re bridge jumping. I used to work on an Alberta History project and I had to go through old newspapers from the entire 20th century. You have no idea how many people across Canada drowned over the Canada Day weekend from boating, swimming and diving accidents. It would be like 30 people across Canada in one weekend.

Weird stuff can happen once you fall into a large body of moving water...I don't think it was the height of the bridge at play. Then again, speculating about this kind of thing feels in poor taste to me.

I really don't want to speculate, but pretty sure that person that jumped from the bridge was drunk, it was 2AM, 5min walk from 'night-life'.

But being reasonable - he flew back to Riga, went partying, got drunk and wanted to prove something to him self, so he jumped off from bridge. As he was drunk, this stupid idea ended in tragedy.

Also sorry guys for mis-information earlier:

Earlier in this site there was just ''pants and phone'' that was left, now they have changed to just ''clothes''.

Also that relatives identified belongings as Pelss, there is nothing now about that.
Hopefully he just turned off his cellphone off for couple of days and wanted to be alone.

I really don't understand what is happening latley, we already have a small country, with very rare talents in hockey, due to poor ''hockey system''. And many of those rare talents have short-life.

2004 - Sergejs Zholtoks(31) - Cardiac dysrhythmia
2011 - Karlis Skrastins(37) - Plane crash
2012 - Kaspars Astasenko(37) - Drug overdose
2013 - Kristians Pelss(20) - Drowning???

Lets hope for the best.

I hope it isn't true, but if it is, I hope they recover the body and he can be put to rest.

They(Edmonton Journal) are even lazy enaugh to not correct mistakes that made google translate.

They just copy pasted Latvian morning news material.

There's no definate comfirmation right now.

It looks like a 30' jump which isn't necessarily life threatening but..

He could have hit his head on something under the water or
He could have been pulled under by undertow created from the current in the river though it looks pretty chill.

I had a buddy die in January in Mexico at our resort, he jumped into the ocean and smacked his head on something he didnt see. He is from the east coast and new the dangers and it still got him.

If Kristian was by himself and thought it would be fun to dive in, swim to shore and go recollect his things, he may have hurt himself and drowned. Suicides don't typically involve leaving the belongings with no note.

I also have been in a suicidal fringe state of mind where I have done risky things and basically told myself if I live it is meant to be if I die oh well I won't know the difference. It could be that type of thing. Either way it doesn't really matter, the bottom line is he is still missing and we may never know.

What I was scared of is if there were rocks or it was too shallow and he could've broken his neck or leg and couldn't swim. Good to know that river looks deep, average temperature, and is sor tof busy with traffic. Would've seen his body by now right? What scares me is that the gulf of Riga is a few miles downstream which might be impossible to find if he did indeed drown.

Whatever happens I had the pleasure to watch him in the dub like majority of you guys as well and will be completely sad if it's true. he had great talent and IMO as going to be the future capain of Latvia.

I hope that he is found safe somewhere but the odds don't look very good right now. I know that we have many younger posters here and at his age I felt damn near invincible. As you get older you realize how fragile life can be and how dangerous/flat out stupid some of the things that you did when you were younger were. Whether it was a suicide attempt or an accident, it is very sad that there's a good chance that this young man's life ended far far too soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kristians and his family.
