They currently have $34.1 million committed to six players for 2014-15, $29.1 million for five assuming they buy out Fleury at some point. I don't think they'll have the issues other people think. This year might be tighter for them if anything, they're only like $7 million under the cap with three forward and one D spot to fill.
They said they won't buy Fleury out.

When you factor in Letang and Kunitz being due a combined ~6 million dollar raise on top of their 7.2m current cap hits, you're left with around 17-20 million dollars to sign 9 forwards, 5 D-men, and a goalie. Someone has to go unless they plan on using thift shop defensemen year in and year out.

I hope they keep Letang and Fleury

they are gonna have to bargain bin and trash pile dig for the rest of their positions. I'm ok with that

Furthermore, it doesn't help that Tanner Glass makes 1.1 million against the cap. He's not much better than Tim Sestito. Very unsensible contract.

If Letang becomes a FA then the Devils need to make him their #1 target.

Hell no, he wants 8mil per year, not happening. Or the more realistic answer Lou probably wouldn't even make him an offer if he hit UFA.

Does Letang really want $8M/year? If so, he's going to end up in the KHL, I expect, nobody else is going to give him that kind of payday.

I read it somewhere on the Penguins board yesterday, I also read that apparently they plan on trading him at this years draft.

Bob McKenzie also just tweeted, that Letang will AT LEAST be looking for 7 mil per year double his current salary.

I agree, his demands are so far off base. I guarantee you he wants 8.5 mil, have fun in the KHL.

You should ever pay a strictly offensive minded D-man 7+ mil.

Just look at the best defenseman on the Stanley Cup winning teams since 95:

Chara, Keith, Doughty, Orpik, Lidstrom x4, Niedermayer, Frank Kaberle, Boyle, Stevens x3, Bourque

I didn't include the Stars or the '96 Avs because I don't know who their best D-men was. Not familiar with those teams. Maybe Adam Foote?

Anyway, look at all of those names and their playstyles. Every one of them is a two-way, better on the defensive end except Orpik who is shutdown D, Niedermayer and Bourque who were two-way offensive, and Boyle who is an offensive minded D-man.

Point being, it's very rare a Stanley Cup winning team has a strictly offensive minded D-man as their best blueliner. Too much money committed to a guy who focuses on the wrong zone.

Foote for 96' Avalanche (or maybe Sandis Ozolinsh), Zubov or Hatcher for 99' Stars.

By that I mean Letang is an offensive d-man and so is Doughty. I consider Suter and Weber Defensive D-men.

Wow, I'd say he's farther from Doughty... Top is, he's asking for top 3-5 in the league money, and he's not going to get it.

He's played with Malkin and Crosby for so long - who are just so good - that his numbers are skewed.

They said they won't buy Fleury out this offseason. That doesn't mean if he has another poor Spring they wouldn't buy him out next offseason with one year left on the deal and two compliance buyouts available (not to mention one very big FA goalie on the market at that point, until he re-signs this offseason and annoys us even more when all of our guys get to FA again). It's not as if they have anyone else to buy out unless they chose to buy out the last year of Paul Martin's deal too. But they gotta keep some defensemen if they are indeed looking to deal Letang.

what?

Doughty is far and away better in every other zone outside of the offensive one and isn't far away from Letang there either.
