they have 2.4 in cap space for only 18 roster players not counting resigning Aulie and then Lindback the year after

It absolutely is.

And there is investigations all the time into such things, but they're extremely difficult to gather enough evidence to see such a thing come to light.

Of course that wouldn't be a written agreement between any parties.

that's 8.5 mill in cap space
then their line up ends ups

Purcell/Stamkos/St Louis
Kulemin/Lecalvier/Frattin

Carle/Hedman
Gunnar/Aulie
Brewer/Gudas
You have Kulemin there too, so the cap space they gain would be 5.725

There are other ways to clear cap space than giving away a top 5 pick.

Don't see anything of the sort in the section, at least not where you'd expect to find that kind of thing.

Compliance Buy-Outs.
During the "Ordinary Course Buy-Out" periods following the 2012-13 NHL Season and 2013-14 NHL Season, in addition to any other Ordinary Course Buy-Outs a Club may want to effectuate pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC, each Club may elect to terminate and "buy-out" the SPC of up to two (2) additional Players (in the aggregate over the two (2) years) on a Compliance basis (a "Compliance Buy-Out") (i.e., each Club shall be entitled to a total of two Compliance Buy-Outs 289 that may be exercised in one year or over two years). Such Compliance Buy-Outs shall be effectuated on the same terms as are set forth in Paragraph 13 of the SPC, except that (i) there shall be no charge against the Club's Averaged Club Salary in any League Year on account of a Compliance Buy-Out and (ii) any amounts paid pursuant to a Compliance Buy-Out shall be counted against the Players' Share in the League Years in which they are paid. Further, a Player who has been bought out under the Compliance Buy-Out provision of this Agreement shall be prohibited from rejoining the Club that bought him out (via re-signing, Assignment or otherwise) for the 2013-14 League Year (if that Player was bought out in 2013) or for the 2014-15 League Year (if that Player was bought out in 2014).
517 pages of new CBA that it could be hidden in granted, but it seems no.

What?!

Lecavalier has little value considering his contract, that's what brought up this unlikely scenario. Let's say Lecavalier nets 2 2nds which is great value for a guy that hasn't topped 50 pts in 5 years playing with an offensive powerhouse in TB. You'd trade Gardiner + Kadri + our 1st for the 3rd overall?

Lecavalier still has a good 4-5 years in him as a good first line center. His cap hit sucks but I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar cap hit for Kessel or Phaneuf once their contracts are renewed.

Realistically, Tampa will want 2 solid players with low cap returning. I see the 1st (21st overall) pick this year, and 2 second rounders for Lecavalier to be a fair deal. Kadri and Gardiner is a slight over payment for someone like Drouin though.

All the rumour says is that TOR made the offer, not that TB is considering it or that is even likely.

I don't believe the Leafs would do this without a guarantee of Mackinnon dropping to 3rd. And since nothing is guaranteed...pass.

Interesting speculation.

I'd definitely do it if I were Toronto.

Keep Vinny on the roser next season then buy him out which would cost almost 23.5 million.

We'd also have Drouin or Barkov for a guaranteed 7 years (3 of which are entry level).

The Tampa Owner, Jeff Vinik was rumoured to be having financial issues in the banking industry last year so maybe this does have some truth.

Seems like a very hefty price for a buyout. I would love for this to happen but I just can't see it.

Guys, the deal would probably be something like:

Kulemin, Gunnarsson, 1st 2013, 1st 2014, 2nd 2013 for Lecavalier+3rd. At the very least, probably more. Its not my 55million bucks so I'm all for it.

Lecavalier is not waiving his NMC to go to the Leafs. Pure pipe dream.

These rumours are all based on some sort of imaginary fantasyland Dave Nonis that has never existed.

If I start up a website and say Toronto is rumoured to trade for Sidney Crosby than it becomes a rumour.

Vinny might not be opposed to the trade cause cause he could earn a lot more if he was bought out which would happen after next season if he came to the Leafs. He'd have 35 million remaining on his contract if he were to be bought out vs. 23.5 if he does get bought out for a difference of about 11.5.

He could certainly make more than that 11.5 if he were to play even 2 seasons past this next one and substantially more than that the longer he plays.

If you told him he was going to be bought out I would bet my mortgage against him invoking his NMC. He would have 35 million reasons to do it.

But I think the only way both Yzermand and Nonis were to complete such a deal, would be if they had Vinny's word he was returning to Tampa Bay at a much cheaper cap hit.
Pretty much Toronto uses the Amnesty and two players and probably 21st and what ever else for the 3rd overall. Would be a genius move for Toronto to have a chance at a high end prospect and a way for the Lightning to get Vinny back at a much lower cap hit.

It's a different way of looking at things I guess, seems like a steep price to pay depending on the package going back, but could be the type of move Toronto should be all over if it's true.

Here's the interesting point and the potential incentive that doesn't get taken in to consideration when these type deals come up is one team is doing the other(owner) a huge favour.

Especially in this case where they'll more than likely get the player back, But there's other issues around that.
