Question is after signing this long term deal... does Holmgren trade him at the deadline OR after the draft (and before the contract kicks in)?

Perhaps my perception of salaries is skewed, but it seems like a bit too much. I like the player and the Flyers team, but can't help thinking that this is a bad deal. In my mind, 8m+ deals should be for the true elite superstars (Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos) and not the guys a tier below them such as Giroux, Toews, Perry.
It seems that the Flyers fans like this deal though, so I'm happy for them

Maybe if Giroux turns into a party boy he will be...

Also, I agree. Your comment is seriously funny and super original.

You can only really compare comgrat to getzlaf and perry... and even given they were ufas... I think this is the new norm

Different CBAs = different contract expectations.

Crosby's first 8 years of his deal (i.e. the max this CBA would allow) = 86.4M, 8.7M
Malkin's 8 year deal = 76M, 9.5M cap hit
Giroux's reported 8 year deal = 66.4M, 8.3M cap hit

i.e. if you were to stick on a few years of cap circumvention on the tail, you'd see probably around a 2M difference in cap hit between Crosby and Giroux.

Totally different scenario. With both of those players, EDM was buying a few RFA and a few UFA years. In Giroux's case, the Flyers are buying 7 UFA years.

In my opinion, the Hall deal looks very good. The Eberle deal is probably somewhere between appropriate and a bit of an overpay. That debate I'm sure can be had elsewhere I'm sure though.

Some differences. Crosby's was before the new CBA for one. Malkin's and Crosby's entirely encompassed UFA years where I am almost certain that one of Giroux's will be a RFA year. So just like a lot of the comparing that goes on on this board apples and oranges get mixed up a lot. It is tempting to compare contracts but rarely is it anything but a misleading exercise.

Let's just say he left some money on the table. He could have hit UFA in an ideal market if the cap does go north of 70 million. Likely 10 million plus per year.

It's like they've created their own internal road blocks.
Which players are they going to have to trade, exactly?

Do you know anything about the Flyers cap management situation?

There are only two people in the league who have more assists this decade than Giroux. One of them has Stamkos next to him and the other has his genetic clone.

Uhh.. source?

Cause Elias has more assists than Giroux in the past 10 years and I'm pretty sure more players do as well

unless you're talking about decade as in the past 3 years which isn't nearly as impressive and quite misleading

Probably not as misleading as extending the unit of analysis to three years before Giroux was even draft eligible...

He's the one who used the word decade

I fail to see how decade is the word to use when you're referring to three years in actuality

Sign and trade to Nashville for their next 4 first round picks. Don't want to trouble them and make them wait a year to sign him to an offer sheet.

Or maybe to Vancouver for signing Kesler. Still waiting on that revenge offer sheet.

That's what 'this decade' means :p

Three years or ten, its still pretty impressive for a 25 year old.

Technically yes.. but it's pretty misleading to use that term when the timespan is really only three years long

That's like saying Crosby is the best player of this millennium

He's a top 10 player in the game.. no need to use stats phrased like that to prove anything..

Obviously would have been nice with under $8M/yr but the benchmark seems to be set with the Perry and Getzlaf contracts.

He's worth it though. One of the best forwards in the league, face of the franchise, captain, best player on the team, etc. etc.
