For what it is worth if those numbers hold up I do think that is a discount. I think if he hit UFA he would hsve gotten 10 million plus given where the cap seems to be going.

It's very simple to see if it was a discount.

Take a comparable player that has a long term deal under the previous CBA.. take the first 8 years of his contract and chop off the last few that lower the cap hit. Compare new cap hits.

I'll let you choose the comparable player..

8.3 mill sounds reasonable.

10 mil would obviously be overpaid but if you ask flyers fans if they rather lose him or have him at 10, very few would choose to lose him.

Players are getting smart. Timonen didn't give a hometown discount for this coming season, a slightly lower contract than what he'd been making but in line with what you'd pay a guy in his late 30s. Streit? Same thing, no discount. Vinnie, 5 years which is longer than most would have given him. Now G has done the same, no hometown discount and full NMC. Why was there a lockout?

Timonen still deserves 6m for how much he plays for us
Streit giving a hometown discount makes no sense. It's like asking crosby to give us one.
Lecavalier turned down more expensive contracts elsewhere.

Agree. These idiots are doomed for failure. Cap goes down contracts keep going up.

Giroux is one of those franchise players that you will pay whatever is necessary to lock him up long term. 8 years, $8.5 is fine with me.

It hasn't even been a year since the Weber ordeal, but I've since read a hundred times that there is absolutely no way any Flyer could ever be offer-sheeted from now until the end of time. Apparently this is something that only happens to other clubs. The Flyers exist in a magic bubble.

Also, I've read that GMs never give out offer sheets as revenge, because "They're not childish" or whatever. Except history has shown that it has been done. Vancouver offer-sheeted Backes in 2008, only to have St. Louis offer sheet Steve Bernier a week later. I'm sure St. Louis considered it less of revenge and more of a deterrent.

The fact is, the Flyers seem to want to sign their big names before they are at risk of getting an offer sheet, just like the rest of the league. That makes sense. It's not certain their players will ever be offersheeted, but it's hardly a lock that they never will be, either.

Now for what Giroux will make. I bet he'll take the 8 year max, no problem. The players made sure to put in a Jeff Carter rule after what happened to him (giving a discount, then getting screwed). So players will continue to take long contracts -- I just wouldn't count on much of a discount. They also can't front load it to extremes any more. Under $8M sounds like a pipe dream.
It will never happen (ok, it will happen at some point because never is a long time) because the Flyers have an organizational practice to resign their pending RFA's way before an offer sheet becomes an option. Now at some point, I'm sure some pending RFA will play hardball and ask for way more than he's worth. But I tend to think that the Flyers would explore trade options long before the offer sheets come flying in.

Told it's not 100 percent finalized yet but looks like 8 years, $66 million for Giroux. Should be finished soon.

That's a good deal. Any young two-way center that puts up the points he does would get a lot more than that on the open market. Looks good.

Giroux's agent probably just showed them this, then wrote 8.XX on a piece of paper.

I do believe that we will see a 10 million per year player. Maybe as soon as a couple of years from now. Again this wpuld be leaving money on the table.

Excellent, the Leafs will be pleased with an extended Giroux. You can have Phaneuf.

The Flyers thank the leafs for their graciousness, and present Mezaroz as a gift, for the gift of Phaneuf.

Per Dreger:

Flyers to sign 1865 to a 1 day contract to fulfill the final terms of Claude Giroux's contract extension.
