Who was our best forward defensively this season?

Couture finished 19th in Selke votes, but I don't consider him our best defensive forward. This kinda just proves that youth and points are more important in Selke voting than actual defensive play.

Thoughts?

Patty Marleau on account of his speedy forecheck/backcheck.

If you go to behindthenet, it was Marleau and it wasn't close.

JT started the season against top competition and it shifted to Couture after they broke up Marleau/JT/Pavs. Marleau was the only Sharks forward to be assigned top matchups for the entire season.

If you include PK, Pavs and Couture catch up a little bit to Marleau. But it is notable that when either Pavs or Marleau are taken off first unit PK the PK suffers. I don't doubt that Couture will achieve their level of proficiency at some point.

Couture did not even play on the top 2 5-on-4 PK units.

Just proof that hype, being drafted high, being young, and finishing top-10 in a significant offensive statistical category means more to "being the best defensive forward in the NHL" than being the best defensive forward in the NHL

At the end of the season he was #1 in 3on5 situations. Initially he was the #5 PK forward but did climb the ladder to the #2 unit.

The voters for Selke would be wise to survey the defensive statistical categories at behindthenet and to be candid as to whether they consider PK in their evaluation.

Historically, they have been pretty good about picking guys who were clearly top defensive guys, but it is more recent that they include offense as a kind of tiebreaker. They use the offensive tiebreaker for the Lady Byng as well.

The voters most likely don't watch the Sharks or look at any stats besides blocked shots which Couture is tops in and takeaways. Marleau's expertise is backchecking and shadowing his man and there's no stats for that.

Couture stood out the most for me in the defensive zone. He blocked shots and knocked pucks away but in the offensive zone Marleau did more. Its all about the +/- though I suppose.

Handzus. There's a reason Chicago gave up so much for him.

Is this an "eye-test" question or are we basing it off pure STATS???

If you were in charge of NHL awards, and had to give the Selke Award to one San Jose Shark player, which would it be?

Kind of ironic that Burns has no votes

Marleau. Maybe Pavelski might get a few votes.
