Most Valuable Oiler #10

Who do you think is the tenth most valuable Oiler going forward?

Consider age, contract, injury history, positional value, leadership, potential, etc... One way of thinking of it would be: in a trade to a neutral team, who would bring the greatest return?

1. Taylor Hall (75%)
2. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (70%)
3. Nail Yakupov (65%)
4. Jordan Eberle (65%)
5. Justin Schultz (75%)
6. Sam Gagner (30%)
7. Ladislav Smid (40%)
8. Oscar Klefbom (30%)
9. Devan Dubnyk (40%)

Voted Petry because he's in the NHL. Otherwise Nurse.

My top ten would have been:
1. Hall
2. Yakupov
3. RNH
4. Eberle
5. J. Schultz
6. Gagner
7. Nurse
8. Perron
9. Smid
10. Petry

Probably Klefbom at 11, Dubnyk at 12, Ference at 13, Hemsky at 14, Marincin at 15

A 27 year old goaltender coming off a .920 season on a team with pretty much zero else in the goaltending category is number 12 on your list?

I voted Nurse here, because I really like the fellow, but I probably should have voted Petry since he's more proven. Perron should also be up here, but I just don't know enough about him to say anything.

Should be Petry after Smid. I'll vote for him again of course.

The question is asking about trade value. An unproven goaltender one year from UFA status wont return as much in trade.

In light of the Schneider trade, I think Nurse should be pretty close to Dubynk

I've been voting for Nurse since #7, but I think Ference's importance to this team is understated right now. Of course he's yet to wear the jersey, but I'm really hoping he's the type of veteran leader that Horcoff was. Vocal, responsible, plays the game the right way. A young team will always benefit from a guy like that.

Lilkely a good indication on his confidence in the player. I'd agree. Dubnyk isn't the guy that'll be in the pipes if/when this team wins a cup

This list is kind of a mess. I mean, if we're doing most valuable to the Oilers team RIGHT NOW then Klefbom shouldn't be in the top 10. If we're doing trade value then Klefbom and Nurse could both be ahead of Smid, maybe Gagner too, I'm not sure how he is valued around the league.

I actually like Dubnyk, but we're talking about a UFA, and the rest of the league (including our own GM) thinks we need another goalie, so I can't put him in the top 10 value wise.

Voted Petry. Nurse has more upside but he's got a ways to go before he gets there and it's not a slam dunk that he does.

So which goalie are the Oilers going to bring in if not Dubnyk? Here's a list of goalies who are UFA's next year with current age.

31 - Lundqvist
33 - Miller
31 - Hiller
28 - Halak
37 - Nabokov
28 - Crawford
37 - Vokoun
28 - Elliott
30 - Emery
28 - Gustavsson

Lundqvist and Crawford are the only guys who had a better save % last year than Dubnyk's .920 and they're not likely to sign in Edmonton. There isn't much left in the way of stud young goalies stuck behind elite number 1's anymore either. In spite of MacT's interest in the goalie market I think Dubnyk is here past this year because he's the best fit given what's available. The Oilers' lack of depth at goalie and depth at defense pushes Petry and Nurse down the list for me.

Schneider was often compared to Dubnyk. You can make arguments for either side on who is better. Vancouver was in a tough position and probably accepted sub-par value for Schneider. However, most non-Oiler fans would probably say that Schneider has/had more value than Dubnyk.

Nurse was drafted 7th overall. Schneider was traded for the 9th overall pick in the same draft.

^i don't know why people keep referring to Dubnyk as "unproven". i feel he has proven a lot on a pretty *hitty team the last 3 years. and before anyone says "he hasn't played a full season yet", he's clearly the #1 guy here despite MacT apparently looking for another starter, and played most of the games last year and the year before.
