Anton Khudobin's next contract

Khudobin has made it clear that the KHL is more than an option for him. He really likes it there and from the way he talked about it in a Russian interview, they love him there. However, from watching him play a decent amount of games this year, I think he's something special. He could be given a shot at #1 and probably excel there.

Here are his stats:

2009–10 Minnesota Wild NHL 2 2 0 0 69 1 48 0 0.87 .979

2010-11 Minnesota Wild NHL 4 2 1 0 189 5 81 1 1.59 .942

2010-11 Houston Aeros AHL 34 19 12 1 1883 81 825 1 2.58 .911

2010-11 Providence Bruins AHL 16 9 4 1 901 36 413 1 2.40 .920

2011-12 Boston Bruins NHL 1 1 0 0 60 1 44 0 1.00 .977

2011-12 Providence Bruins AHL 44 21 19 3 2597 113 1275 2 2.61 .919

2012-13 Boston Bruins NHL 14 9 4 1 803 31 388 1 2.32 .920

Although he has only played 21 games at the NHL level, he's 14-5-1, has an average 2.03 GAA and 9.33 SV%. I could see a team offering him a nice 1 year contract if they're willing to take a risk on him, to see if he can handle a full year and earn his money. Which teams would be interested? He likely wouldn't cost too much, however, you'd have to beat the KHL. He plays a lot like Tim Thomas, extremely aggressive (in a good way) and is a huge competitor. He wants to win night in and night out. Would anyone be interested? Rask is going to get paid big time, and the Bruins have big raises for a lot of players coming in next year. We don't have the luxury of paying more than ~2m or so for a backup, and Svedberg had a very impressive year in Providence besides the playoffs, and only costs $1m.

I like him and would want him in Toronto as a tandem with Reimer but would not pay him more than the 1.8 that Reimers getting

I could go 2.5-3 x 3 years from the Isles end. Don't know if it's enticing enough for him though

I think he needs to know that he'd be the #1 coming into the season.

If he goes to the KHL then he'd be a big part of a team. He'd need the right amount of money and an equal opportunity from an NHL team.

The Islanders would be a nice fit for him. Young team, just made the playoffs. Really good future, had their playoff chances stolen away due to a bad playoff by their goalie. Took the #1 seeded offensive juggernaut to 6 games, OT. I'm guessing Nabokov won't be back for you guys. He'd fit in well on Long Island.

I'm not a fan of Khudobin but if the Kings are asking too much I wouldn't mind offering a contract to him

I'd also rather sign Khoubodin

Than give up prime assets like Nino or our #1 pick for Bernier. The latter would also require a bigger and longer contract, IMHO.

Jets are interested, Pavelec needs to be pushed. No idea what we'd be willing to pay though.

I agree. He should definitely be a target of Chevy.

khudobuin is definitely one of the more overshadowed but intriguing UFAs for me to see where he ends up, for what type of salary/length as well as type of role (#1 outright? #1A/B situation?).

3x3 with Pittsburgh. Split time with Vokoun.

Pittsburgh can then ship Fleury away, trade/buyout, i dont care.

I suggested this to my relatives in Franklin, PA. I'd make him the #1 with Vokoun backing him up.

I will be sorry to see him go as a Bruins fan, but he is going to want more money than the Bruins are going to want to pay, the Bruins are stacked in the goaltending department.

Rask will play as many games as he can and I imagine it will be around 60+ games, Svedberg was the AHL goaltender of the year and they have a few very good younger goaltending prospects.

Khudobin reminds a lot of us of Tim Thomas stylistically and he can be absolutely brilliant at times. I think consistency is a very small issue with him but I think it could just be that he needs to play more.

A platoon situation might be something that would work out well for Khudobin, what wouldn't work is if he was a backup to someone like Henrik Lundqvist. He is going to want to play more games than that.

From what was mentioned in this thread Toronto or Wnnipeg make pretty good sense for him I think, he may not be the #1 to start, but he will be given the chance to make a case for him taking over as the #1 and if not he will still get 35 games in a season.

Absolutely, This guy would help our young goldies mature another year or two and come up and be back up to him and be mentored as well...
he is only 27 I think it's a no brainerfor the isles;
give a 3yrs-8m or 4yrs-10m if he turns into another tim thomas then we can give him another 3 or 4 yrs and comntinue to build our goalies also help bring home the cup.

With the potential glut of UFA goalies, I see Khudobin going KHL. He's good, but if I'm an NHL GM I would not be comfy going into the 2013-14 season with Khudobin being my #1. So welcome home Khud. Bundle up baby.

That's why he'd be a good fit for a rebuilding team (calgary) or as a backup plan for a questionable starter (wpeg).

With some of the $$$ amounts being thrown around in this thread, there is no way the Bruins are keeping him. I think he makes a little less than 900k right now, but he had a good season and could potentially start somewhere. I think something like $1.75m-$2.50m is the most reasonable -- keep in mind he hasn't proven he can be a #1 yet.

Honestly, some team should throw 3M at him for kicks, because I think he's that good.

Edmonton is perfect, because he can be the 1A with Dubnyk, but I think he'd rather have a No.1 role

Phoenix makes some sense, same for Minnesota.

I agree he would be a good fit in Calgary, Edmonton or Jersey. Wild will likely re-sign Backy.
I have no issue with the dude at all. Contrary to my rather glib post earlier. Granted I have no idea what it truly going on in his mind. There appears to be a surplus of UFA goalies out there available. I try to put myself in his skates. He is a capable goalie. He wants to play regular reps. There appears to be more available goalies via free agency or goalies on the move in the NHL. I believe AK will hedge his bets and play in the KHL. Where he has better odds being a starter AND cashing in for a nice payday.
I look at it this way. When I was a HS soph I made the varsity squad. As a squash I was a 4th liner and never played regular minutes. About 1/3rd into the season I plead with my coach to demote me to JV so I could actually play the game. I think it's similar with Khudobin. Sometimes it is more satisfying to be the big fish in the little pond.
