Sharks Re-Organization Shake-Up

Brodie Brazil ‏@brodiebrazilCSN 4m
"New organizational structure" has Malcolm Bordelon, Charlie Faas & Mike Lehr departing #sjsharks front office.

#sjsharks announce major front office changes: John Tortora named COO, Jim Goddard promoted with added responsibilities.

I'm thinking the owner wants to implement a new culture in the org. New people, new structure, I'd guess new style and new priorities. Didn't he say he thought prospect development was important?

Hopefully. I'll wait for someone versed in this sort of thing to sort me out.

It doesn't mean much of anything to the hockey side at this point. But it should keep people on their toes.

That's what I'm thinking as well.

Sent a letter to Bordelon last week, lamenting the horrendous merchandise selection this last season (and indicating how nice it was to not break my "lockout" of Sharks merchandise for four months in response to the league's lockout for four months).

I would not be surprised that certain performance features of the merchandise (just one thing under Bordelon as business op head) may have contributed.

So, you still believe DW might get canned?

Probably not this year but he should feel as if he's on the hot seat. I can't see him staying beyond next season if the results are similar.

The results have been pretty good so far. Good returns for slow players, brought in some serviceable bottom 6 players, drafted and signed a number of NHL potential prospects. The problem at the moment is depth. I think that he needs 2 years for us to see what happens because he knowingly set up all the contracts to end next year so I think he has things planned for next summer.

Just asking, cause you were adamant that there was still a possibility that DW might get canned this season and then said this doesn't change anything on the hockey side. I think it states clearly that DW will remain in his current position.

In the last two days we've discovered that the coach and the GM are going nowhere.

Wilson and Torts would be hilarious.

Wilson trying to not say anything controversial, Torts thriving on it.

We'd have to have a pool on the length of his tenure.

That depends on what you're judging him on. I don't judge him solely on the players that he picks up. A large part of his job depends on the team's result relative to expectations. Not that my expectations matter...just ownership. It would be very easy to can DW under the logic that he's just not good enough to get the job done. DW has given consistent results as a GM. Consistently in the playoffs and consistently out before the Finals. So while it definitely could be worse, he's shown over a healthy amount of time to not know what it takes from his vantage point to build a championship caliber team.

I don't really have much hope for what the plans are when the big boys come off the books. Either they keep them and status quo continues or they leave and they have very little to replace them with. They won't sign top end free agents. They don't really have the expendable assets to trade for a top end player and I don't foresee them having that ability next off-season either. They have a fairly young group of NHL'ers at the second level in terms of core players but they don't have three young players to take over the Marleau, Thornton, and Boyle trio as of now. Couture handles one but no d-man is at or near that level and maybe Hertl gets there but not right now and reasonably not for another two or three seasons. I don't expect much from the organization player-wise after next season.

Adamant that there was a possibility? You make it sound stronger than it really was. It was merely stating a possibility. I thought once Plattner took over as majority owner and said that he was going to get more educated about the entirety of the franchise that it was highly likely that DW would last through the end of next season.

The coach and GM will probably get an opportunity to begin next season as a regular year but don't be fooled into believing that there's no way these two could be canned by this time next year. I think a second round exit or earlier next year would spell the end for both.

Sign on Tortorella's SS&E COO desk: "I thought that little **** Benn Ferriero played well."

You must be smoking some pretty good rocks if you think Koala signed an extension for just 1 year here.

The only way Todd gets fired is if he fails to make the playoffs or has a quick first round exit.

He just extended his head coach. He's not going anywhere.

What his extension actually is is irrelevant. Coaches get fired under contract repeatedly. That doesn't guarantee jack squat. If Todd and DW don't get this team past where they ended this season, that is a massive failure and I sincerely doubt given the tenure both have already had here that their leash is very long with the team's new owner. He's not going to put up with mediocre playoff runs for that long given his background.
