starting off simple

Letang is one of the best d-men in the league. Pay him as such. Too bad we couldn't do it a year ago to get a back diving deal. Oh well. Suck it up and sign him. We talk about Geno with the idea that you just don't guys like Geno so you can't win a trade involving him. Letang is like that, just not quite on the same level. Letang will almost definitely be the best player in any trade involving Letang. Its not quite impossible to get someone better, but its pretty damn close. Not only that, but if we do get someone better, they likely fit the cap structure of our team even worse than Letang. Particularly for this coming season.

I notice this discussion would be much further along if Despres and Bennett actually got quality ice time last year.

And a good ole juvenile LOLOLOLOL at Scuderi at 3.5 per year. He'll get far beyond that. The hate for Orpik is understandable. But aside from getting beat in OT against Boston, he was only behind Martin for best defensemen in the playoffs. Orpik isn't going anywhere.

I think most of this board wouldn't bat an eyelash if anyone said Bennett is currently the fourth or fifth best player on the team.

Dreger on the NHL network reiterated basically what he said in that Insider Trading article.

Yesterday after the GMs meeting he said that Shero made it abundantly clear that he wanted to resign Letang. Dreger also thinks that we won't go over $7m but there are some close to Letang that believe if we offer him an 8yr/$52m deal ($6.5m caphit) he would stay because he likes it here and knows he has a chance to win.

He added that Letang's agent probably isn't telling people that though.

Letang for 6.5 would be almost as dreamy as Letang's flow

I kind of hope Pascal Dupuis signs elsewhere so Bylsma has to try something different for the top 6. It's sad that it has to be like that.

I like that line-up, but I seriously doubt Sill makes this team...ever.

Although, a 4th line of Clutterbuck, Lapierre, Vitale...would be such a spectacle to watch every night. I like the idea of this team being hated even more lol.

One thing that Shero does have in his favor now, is that he can offer an extra year of guaranteed contract that no other GM can. $52M guaranteed is nicer than $49M guaranteed, even if the $49M has a possibility of ending up being even more later.

Of course, if Hughes thinks he can talk another GM into a 56M contract (8M x 7years), then all bets are off...

For 1m, you might as well just keep Glass and go with a Glass, Jeffrey, Vitale 4th line.

Yeah, me too. But then there's the pessimistic (realist, really) in me saying, "It could be so much worse. God only knows who could end up in the top 6 and make you wish Dupuis was still there." Because really, it's Bylsma.

I want Dupuis out of the top 6 and the only way that will happen, with Bylsma, is for him to be traded, but you can always end up missing Dupuis.

It would all be easier without a certain 5 million/year regular season only franchise goalie, j/s.

I second this. Maxim Lapierre? We already have Joe Vitale. We don't need another fourth-line center. It makes no sense. If we're going in THIS direction, just bring back lover boy Adams.

And let me add that we still have Dustin Jeffrey and Jussi Jokinen as capable centers, too. Absolutely no need for a POS like Max Lapierre. Ever.

You know, this is a very good point and something that I haven't even thought about. That extra year could end up being a huge factor.

Good, good. This reaction is perfect. We need players that people hate. Our team has to be more annoying.

No matter what else is said, as long as Craig Adams is not back, it's a good off season.

Craig Adams on the 4th line is the least of my worries.

6.5 would be very tolerable. If this is the case, sign away.

Of course, if Hughes thinks he can talk another GM into a 56M contract (8M x 7years), then all bets are off...
This absolutely means squat, the 7 years will just have extra cap hit applied.

Pens: 8x6.5 = 52
Anyone else: 7x7.5 = 52.5

He won't lose a thing either way.
