I don't like the mandatory visors for refs rule, but I'm glad to see they are actually making stiffer penalties for head contact.
I disagree with the no checking in bantam and up, but I think higher level pee-wee teams need checking early on. One of the trends I'm noticing with youth hockey these days is head down play. The kids aren't conditioned to look for hits, and are keeping their heads down as a result. I see a lot of accidental collision going on, and I feel it's important to teach children how to hit correctly, how to look for hits, and how to avoid hits early on. Even in jr hockey I see a lot of guys keeping their heads down when they have the puck. You can tell a kid to keep his head up all you want, but unless you re-enforce that, they have no consequences early on to remind them to keep their head up, until it's too late and someone gets hurt.
