Some big news out of Colorado Patrick Roy said there drafting MacKinnon and he's going to be there third line center next year.

Quote:
If the draft was today, he said, they'd select Halifax center Nathan MacKinnon with the first pick.

"It would be tough for us not to take MacKinnon," Roy told ESPN The Magazine. "MacKinnon is ready to play tomorrow."

But right now, drafting MacKinnon and having him start the season as the Avalanche's third-line center is his preference.

"It would be great for MacKinnon to start there. Less pressure," Roy said. "It's the perfect fit for him."
Paul Statsny look like he's could be moved and a change of scenery might be good for him. Maybe Daley+prospect or a pick could get him

I doubt it.

I read that Roy wants to shift RoR to the wing, so Colorado's lineup should look like this:

Landeskog-Stastny-Hejduk
O'Rielly-Duchene-Parenteau
McGinn-McKinnon-Downie

That's a pretty sick top 9 right there, but their defense looks like crap if they pass on Jones.

Regardless ....

Last season Lites and Gaglardi talked about taking advantage of teams in cap trouble, and I imagine that's a plan Nill would be on board with. Hunter was a guy with what seemed like loads of potential who never put it together outside of 1 maybe 2 seasons. Ballard has several impressive seasons of physical, steady D play and 21-39 points/year over 5 out of 8 seasons. If you can get him for cheap, there's really no downside to testing the common theory that he just never meshed with AV.

One Canucks fan did mention Rome for Ballard. At only a net gain of $2.7 million in space, I take that swap. Rome honestly did surprise me that he wasn't terrible. As much as I pulled for GM Joe, I assumed Rome was going to be another failed 6/7 D pushed into a bigger role. That said, he wasn't so special that I don't mind dumping him.

They're not a lottery team. If we played a full season Colorado likely finishes between 9th and 11th.

I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily but how do you explain their 1st overall selection this year?

I don't believe what they said but even if they wanted to ice that lineup for one season, great. What do they do next year when Stastny's contract is up? Just let him walk for nothing...re-sign him to a multi-year deal that will keep MacKinnon held back for years to come?

One of their centers is on the move sooner or later. And it's not like they have anything to gain by flat out saying that they don't have room for Stastny so of course they're saying O'Reilly will be pushed to the wing.

They ice that lineup, trade Stastny at the deadline move MacKinnon to 2nd line center and hope they get a good defenseman back in trade for Stastny. If they have worries about whether Jones is a franchise defenseman or just a good solid guy like E. Johnson or Hedman, then heck yeah I take MacKinnon and worry about how to fix the defense after. Mac probably has the highest floor along with a fantastic ceiling. It's no wonder there's been talk.

More rumors this one from DETROIT FREE PRESS/MLIVE.COM
Quote:
Ansar Khan, meanwhile, reports Holland will try to alleviate his logjam at forward with trades before turning to compliance buyouts. Khan cites a source claiming winger Jordin Tootoo is available, as well as fourth liner Cory Emmerton. He also suggests Filppula’s rights could be shopped.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like Holland intends to be quite busy over the next seven-ten days. I could see him shopping Filppula’s rights, and wouldn’t be surprised if they moved Tootoo. He needs to free up some cap space to retain a number of their key players, and I believe Holland would prefer re-signing Cleary and Brunner.
Let the off-season begin!!
EDIT: Also NYR's Glen Sather said he's made his decision on buying Richards out or not but isn't telling anybody yet because he wants to keep his options open.

I saw that earlier, but I was really surprised they'd move a young, inexpensive guy in Emmerton.

He was a 2006 2nd round pick for Nill so I could see him possibly taking a stab at him. There's nothing particularly special about him, but he does have a small cap hit. He could provide some depth with Garbutt and MacDermid.

Hejduk's not a top 6 forward anymore. McGinn and Downie are both better.

But I thought Tootoo was such a great signing for them?

I'll be stunned if anyone actually wants that *********.

Haters gonna hate.

Do think it's funny Winnipeg is ahead of us in that respect.

I'm sad to hear they're not going to give Dowling a NHL contract but happy he's staying with Texas.

Maybe he destroys the AHL as he'll get a chance at a full AHL season this time around and get a chance next year.

Not sad about Hedden. Kind of disappointed with Fortunus, not surprised with Benn.

Off-season is young...I can see Dallas moving some assests for sure.

Ya that makes no sense. Winnipeg is trash and they were playing in the easiest division in hockey..
