2014 and Beyond!

Minnesota has some cap space coming up next year but some big holes yet to fill. We also have some big rookies coming up for contract and that cap space is going to be dented pretty hard with those extensions. Given Spurgeon's contract, it's safe to assume that we should be looking at equivalent players and their sophomore contracts when trying to figure what we will be paying.

2014 FA:
Dany Heatley - 7.5
Jason Pominville - 5.3 (4.5)
Michael Rupp - 1.5
Zenon Konopka -.925
Jason Zucker - .833
Jake Dowell - .700
Nate Prosser - .825
Clayton Stoner - 1.050

Dowell, Konopka, Rupp and Heatley should all be gone. I wouldn't be surprised if we decided to retain Heatley at a much lower cap hit but his speed puts a crimp on his usefulness with the team. Defensively both of those guys are gone. That leaves us with Pominville and Zucker.

Pominville I believe will be looking for a retirement contract. 4-5 years and might take a lesser deal. I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers are around 4-4.5 million (20-22.5 million total) with the bulk coming at the beginning. Zucker is harder to really pin down. He hasn't made any big splashes in the league yet, we have high hopes for him. He's on a sweetheart of a deal. I think around 3 years for 2.5-3 million would probably be in his range, barring some miracle.

2015 FA:
Kyle Brodziak - 2.833
Mikael Granlund - 2.100
Torrey Mitchell - 1.900
Charlie Coyle - .975
Keith Ballard - 1.5
Jonas Brodin - 1.44
Marco Scandella - 1.025
Josh Harding - 1.900

Harding is done. Brodziak might be gone as soon as next year. Mitchell, I don't see him coming back. Ballard has a possibility but he might price himself out if he rebounds. Granlund, Coyle, Brodin and Scandella are the big names. Granlund I can see like Zucker. 3 years, 3-3.5 million. Kadri's contract this off-season is a good barometer on Granlund. I see them both being similar. Lots of skill, need time to develop. Coyle I see a little higher, 3 years 4-5 million, simply because he's a bit rarer to find. Big guy, soft hands. He needs to develop that offense though. Brodin, I see at 6-7.5 million. Really depends on how high the cap is but Brodin is one of those rare defensemen that had a major impact on the game immediately and I can see a long contract (8 years) and lots of money thrown at him. Scandella is a wash, I think he might see a raise if he develops to around 2.5 million.

Other guys:
Nino Niederreiter
Brett Bulmer
Darcy Kuemper
Johan Gustafsson
Erik Haula

Kuemper is the only one with good experience in the NHL. I say around 2 million? 1.5 million as a backup for a few years. The other guys might get a minimum increase, if anything.

I think Brodins contract will be more similar to McDonaghs.

I don't think we can assume a 3 - 3.5 for Zucker or the other guys (Granlund, Coyle, Granlund, Nino). It really all depends on their performance this year. They aren't all going to bust out this year or next so i assume some end up getting Scandella like deals. It is pretty hard to estimate those guys next contracts when they have barely played in the NHL. I could maybe see around 3 for Coyle given what he did last year, but over a full year everything is different.

I think of more of OLE in Phoenix and then added another 1/2 million (or 1.5 million) due to how big the cap space will be in two years.

I would say more like Roman Josi at this point. But he still has a few years until he is getting paid. So if his offensive game can step up I can see the OEL comparison.

That's fair, however I don't know if Granlund and Nino will be taking significant pay cuts. They could see a raise of a few hundred and still be around 2.5 for a cap hit.

I don't see the Josi/Brodin comparison. I see the OEL and Brodin comparison a lot more.

Unless Rupp's play sharply declines next season, I think we try to re-sign him to a 1-year deal once his contract expires.

That makes sense. Very good company he is in, love it.

You thinking of bringing Heater back for the 3rd line? If so, not a fan.

Eh. I'm not opposed so long as Dowell gets his shot. ZK is gone though. Mitchell is definitely resigning elsewhere now that basically all the SJ players are gone after next year.

I like how you guys think we're gonna re-up our fourth liners contracts when they're done. How long has Fletcher been here and you guys haven't learned anything?

He's a 4th liner who just had his contract re-upped.

Points for me.

That's true that Larson has a better offensive game. We'll just see how Brodin grows, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is the yin to Larson's yang.

Did he even play a game in the NHL last year? He's an AHL 3rd liner at best.

Actually, yes he did play games (2 in the playoffs) and was called up twice in April to play only to sit because Konopka stated he could play on a broken foot. If your 4th line guys are playing well together, you try to resign them. Rupp and Mitchell were great to watch all things considered. I'm not expecting 20 goal scorers out of either of them. But they play defense and they were able to get it into the offensive zone for the scorers to get out there.

They are on Bonus laden contracts. Thus far they have seen no where near the money on their caphits read on capgeek. If they make all the 2.1-2.5 million this season(and next for Granlund) there caphits read, they will have earned raises. If they don't they could easily come in at 1.5 and still be considered raises.

What is their base salary? I heard Nino's still in the two millions without any bonuses.

Max base salary minus all bonuses on an elc is a little over $800k.

Because they have larger incentive bonuses?
