Fixing The Oilers

With the cap dropping so much next year some teams are going to have to part with players to get down to the new cap .
What players will become available ? What will it cost to get them ?

The Oilers needs are size , grit , Defence , and A number 1 goalie as DD seems to give up to many soft goals .

I think its time for a full rebuild. Start selling of assets to draft in the top 5 for 3-5 years.

Hmm...they could try for Seth Jones, Connor McDavid, and Sean Day.

LOL at the OP and the first response.

Want to fix the Oilers?

#1: Build a time machine.
#2: Go forward three years into the future.
#3: Nab Hopkins, Schultz, Klefbom, maybe Lander, Marincin and maybe Pitlick.
#4: Come back from the future.
#5: Build portant temporal shield generators.
#6: Place temporal shield generators on the players from the future and activate them.
#7: Kidnap players listed from the present.
#8: Tie players from the present up, set the time machine to go back to the year 5 billion BC and send it flying into the sun.

Boom. We win a cup.

LOL , been there done that . It is not working . I think we are a few pieces away . The team is improving . I said from the start we would not make the playoffs , but if we can finish with 48 points we should be happy . Now next year there should be no reason to not be in the playoffs .

i think something along the lines of cutting/trading the ineffective players and getting quality vets to bridge the gap between the growing pains stage and the elite unstoppable offensive machine that everyone knows will be the oilers in 3-4 years.

There is nothing wrong with Dubnyk and there is more of a pressing issue with the lack of size with Oilers top 6 and at C. The Oilers will also have their own cap issues in the next couple of years and don't need to take on any large contracts. Would rather see the Oilers get players that want to play for the Oilers, then having to overpay them like Belanger and Eager.

Yes i agreed . I think the Oilers are holding off on Smid because Players will become available because of cap issues . I do not think Iginla can be resigned by the Pens . Maybe we can take a run at him . Have not watch him play this year so maybe he not worth it any more . I can see 5 or 6 of our guys being gone next year . Jones , Whitney , Belanger , Symth and maybe Smid . I think Symth is bought out and hired in the front office . and the last one i think is Hemsky . We need to make room for Yakupov .

While i agree about overpaying , DD looks great at times ,but he lets in too many soft goals . There are going to be players being bought out that will need a new job .

Yeah, but you know, that's more a TEAM problem, as they haven't scored enough to let Dubnyk be anything short of flawless every game, which Every goalie in the league isn't every night.

Do you actually want those players on your team, and in some cases you will have to pay a premium to get them.

Dubnyk most nights has been the best Oiler on the ice, he does let in the odd soft goal though, but that should change with experience. The Oilers are missing leadership and have a couple of players that need to be given the boot. Some of the younger players need to step up and take control, because the veterans on the Oilers are not doing it.

Two options:

a) Keep the team together, draft better complementary players, wait 3-5 years for them to develop and make the team, and hope the top players aren't irrevocably broken by a team with a losing culture.

b) Trade quality for quantity to get immediate help. Former 1st overall picks have a lot of value, e.g. Nash for Anisimov, Dubinsky, and Erixon or E. Johnson for Stewart and Shattenkirk. It's pretty common to trade stars and former high draft picks for other players; just look at 90's Colorado.

They don't need fixing, they are a young team; give them a couple more years and they'll be playoff contenders for years to come.

In my opinion, and it's just an outsiders opinion, the Oilers need a #1 defensemen first and foremost, and a goalie tandem that can challenge one another for the starting spot. Dubnyk is fine, but you need someone else threatening to steal his spot.

Getting a #1 d-man is nearly impossible though. Might have to settle for a good #2, but it needs to be a big minute two-way player that can really anchor your D.
