Danny Briere

ESPN announced that the Flyers are going to buy out his contract making him a free agent. He turns 36 in October. Do you guys feel like the blues would have any interest in him? He is a center that is great in the playoffs (Career 109 points in 108 playoff games). He's not true #1 center he used to be, but maybe he could help the team. Thoughts?

He's not a center and he'd be just like McDonald last season.

Slight correction.

No I don't think he helps the Blues next season.

He's always been poor defensively, and now that he doesn't score anywhere near the same pace, he brings nothing. Pass even at league minimum. Much rather have Sobi.

No interest, doesnt play center and refuses to help on the defensive side, Hitch would hate him.

He seems to want to stay in the North East for his family. So even if I thought he was useful, which I don't, there is almost no chance he would sign with us.

Frankly, it became hard to figure out what to do with McDonald the latter half of the season. Schwartz solidified his position on the top line, and was so much more effective than McDonald. But McDonald couldn't really play a bottom 6 role effectively either. So....not sure the Blues particularly need to replace him specifically. They do need a center and another forward, but if they get an upgrade in the top 6 I expect it will include another forward under contract going the other way. So the 2 open positions in the 14 forwards will probably not be guys slated for other than bottom 6 depth.

I still see Jaskin making the team, just how I saw Schwartz make the team.

I think the Blues will actually look into Briere, but I doubt he comes here.

what were some of the lines philly was using last season or the year before last. Could Briere be utilized on the second line effectively?

He was used as a winger like McDonald, but like McDonald, he is no longer what he was. At this point he'd only be able to provide 3rd line production, but his style doesn't fit the 3rd line.

question. this thread was started on an ESPN quote about hockey. I didn't think ESPN even knew what hockey was anymore.

The only reason the Eastern States Pimping Network even paid attention to this issue is because it involved a large city in the Northeast. If Danny Briere was playing for Colorado or Phoenix or Dallas, or St. Louis, Bristol wouldn't have the time of day for him.

Briere is certainly intriguing, however I do not think he fits in on the Blues. If STL is willing to pay 6 million, I would target someone else or try and extend Pietrangelo. I bet he ends up in New York or New Jersey.
