San Jose Re-Signs Jason Demers [1 Year/$1,500,000]

http://sharks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=675424&navid=TW

Quote:
San Jose Sharks (@sanjosesharks) Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group II restricted free agent defenseman Jason Demers (@jasondemers5) to a one-year contract.

In 2012-13, Demers played 22 games for San Jose, posting three points (one goal, two assists) and 10 penalty minutes. He played in one game during the postseason.
Quote:
The six-foot-one, 195-pound native of Dorval, QC was selected by San Jose in the seventh round (186th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft.
No word on financials, yet.

probably around 1M-1.5M no more... last chance to make an impact before San Jose moves on.

Has he declined the last couple of years? I remember being impressed by him not long ago.

Combination of injuries, bad partners and being in the dog house.

Good signing. He's an underrated guy who had a rough year. Expect him to have a good year with injuries behind him..

1 year for 1.5M per Kevin Kurz.

Little bit on the high end. I would have given him 1M.

And someone thought they could get Stefan Noesen for him.

This signing isn't even stickied!

He hasn't, but I can see why you'd think he has.

It's the primary reason I want Todd McLellan fired.

Yeah, I don't get to see him play much being a Devils fan, especially this season. He's obviously very talented, so he'll probably be out of McLellan's dog house sooner or later.

Yes, what an excellent way to judge a player.

Great! Now let's see if we can actually freaking put him in. He's talented and there is no reason he shouldn't be in the line up.

Will this guy ever become a 25-plus minute defenseman?

Boyle was showing him the ropes a couple seasons ago. Don't know if he is now. If he is, then yeah he will develop into a top 4 that can play first pairing. It will require a lot of discipline on his part though.

I don't really think Boyle is a great mentor; I think those might have been some assumptions we made based on his progress.

LOL, no, haha.

Do you know how many defencemen averaged 25 minutes a night this year? FOURTEEN.

The year before that (2011-12)? ELEVEN.

You're basically asking if Demers can become a top-20(ish) defenceman in the league. The answer: extremely doubtful.
I get that Demers is better than he showed this past season, but let's be realistic.

He's a 7th rounder that pushed himself through the minors. He's only got 100 games at the AHL level, which is no large amount for late round D. He's got some skills, but he's still early on in his development.
