Carolina's #5 & #35 pick, thehockeywriters two-round mock

I recently completely a two-round mock draft for THW: http://thehockeywriters.com/ives-moc...hl-mock-draft/

Due to GM Jim Rutherford's penchant for drafting North American forwards in the 1st round (only 3 D-men since 2000, no Euros since Igor Knyazev in 2001) I had the Canes taking Sean Monahan 5th.

In the second round I had Carolina getting what I would consider a steal with D Madison Bowey.

I would love to hear what you Carolina fans all think of this.

Might happen, but JR has said he wants an NHL ready forward and mentioned that the Euros have already played against men. This board is generally fine with any of Barkov, Lindholm, Nichushkin, or Monahan.

Bowey would be a steal at 35, I see him going higher at 20-30. Top-2 potential Dman.

How about Nurse with the 5th pick. Give me all your thoughts about that if that is what were to happen.

Riot. Widespread calls among hardcore Canes fans for JR to step down.

Yeah, if we want Nurse we could trade down to 7 or 8.

Even then Ristolainen is a better option. Bigger by 20 lbs, nastier, doesn't lack hockey sense, already played against men for 2 years, and the Canes' summary seemed higher on him.

Canes just use their summary to throw other teams off

I agree, but when forecasting a GM's draft selections, it's important to keep in mind their past tendencies -- and Rutherford tends to shy away from defensemen in the first round, preferring to go after high-upside rearguards in the second. Moreover, he REALLY shies away from Euros in the first, not having drafted one since Igor Knyazev (ouch) way back in 2001 when we were much younger and Justin Bieber was a zygote.

I also agree that Bowey would be a steal at 35, but don't rule it out -- it's a deeper draft than normal and there are several guys with similar ratings on the blueline -- Bowey, Mueller, Hagg, McCoshen, Santini, Morrissey, Vanelli, Bigras, et al. One or two will fall to the early second round, no doubt.

Nurse is NOT a #5 quality pick. I'd be surprised if he's the 3rd d-man picked tomorrow.

yeah not even close. there seems to be so much more to rankings than talent and what meets the eye imho. perhaps size in his case? if by some ******* chance the canes pick him, i hope i can see whatever it is that has him ranked so high.
