I think that the Oilers would do that...then look for a UFA 2nd line C.

"Big Buff" is the better player and the value is close but he won't fit into Dallas Eakins new fitness first system, while Gagner embodies hardworking and fitness.

Great trade!
The Oilers just need to find a 2,3,4 Centre

If this is fair value then I have been overvaluing Big Buff.

No thanks from oilers. already thin at C and Buff doesn't fit the new coach and his fitness demands. Gagner is a core part of the oilers right now.

Pretty accurate assessment. Value wise I hint it's in the right ball park with the Oil maybe adding a 2nd, but for all the reasons you listed, it makes zero sense.

Sorry. We're already looking for 2 centers. Can't afford to lose Gagner right now.

I'm embarrassed to say that I, one of Gagner's biggest supporters on HFboards, didn't know that Gagner was that good on the PK or was that so effective in that many stats.

That's seriously the makings of a damn good second line center.

Byfuglien is a little bit more valuable than Gagner. Edmonton has to add.

That's fine and dandy if you feel that, but Gagner has more value to Edmonton than Buff does. Oil fans are sweating enough already imagining how we're going to land a 3rd line, a 4th line center, an extra forward, a 2nd pairing stay at home d-man, a third pairing PMD and a backup goalie; the last thing we need to do is make a move that makes the list longer or more difficult.

I am against the trade as well, but I wouldn't use oilerbear's cherry picked stats either. I've seen the guy make a case for Horcoff, etc. At the end of the day, advanced stats work against themselves. I'll just go by viewing the player(s), and while I'm happy with Gagner as our 2C and feel he's a much better fit with Eakins than BIG Buff would be due to conditioning, you can't deny that Buff is the more valuable player. Defensive flaws? Sure, but the dude is massive, has a cup ring, a bomb from the point and excellent offensive production.

If Gagner was on another team, would you trade J Schultz for him? I wouldn't think so. Buff should be regarded in the same sense, albeit a different player.

Sam Gagner was 61st in the league in blocked shots for centers with 22 in 48.

87th in the league for hits among centers with 35 in 48

47th for take aways.

No maybe you are suggesting that among those 90 top scoring centers, Sam Gagner is in the top 20 of those guys... but that to me seems like some serious skewing of stats.

Suggesting that Sam Gagner is a player who throws hits or blocks shots on any sort of consistent basis is simply not true. He averages less than 1 of each a game. Same with takeaways.

No way I trade a 50-60pt DMan for Gagner...and I like Gagner. However he doesn't really fill a need o be completely honest with you. Soon Scheifele will be our second line C...no need for Gagner.

If Im trading Buff, I would be lookin for Eberle in return.

It's ok, Oil Fans, I have my flame retardant suit on. Have at her.

By your own admission you know it's not a realistic request. No need for flaming, simply not happening. Better to simply focus on the fact Buff wouldn't fit with our new coach and call her a day.

I also like the Jets and think they should keep Buff and continue to build that big and tough D corps. If they draft Zadorov, that would be ridiculous to have Buff, Bogo, Trouba, Stuart and Zadorov on the same back end. Toby would be the only little guy.

I know Jets fans bring it up a lot but it beats repeating...since Byfuglien has played defence in the league he is second in defensive goal scoring (behind Weber ) and second in points ( behind Karlsson)

Byfuglien is an elite offensive player, and underrated around here defensively. I'm not saying he's fantastic or anything, but he's better than people give him credit for. He's a unique talent in the NHL and you don't trade him for guys like Gagner.

I dont think Byfuglien fits Eakins system.

And tbh Gagner is a great 2C, would be almost perfect if he could just win more draws.

Sorry EDM, we'd rather keep our high scoring dman then add to the list of 2C's we have (Little, Scheifele, Burmi, Antropov and Jokinen can all slot in on the 2nd)

We're pretty set, and while Gagner would be an upgrade on everyone but Little right now, he's not warranted Buff.

Have a nice day!
