I am not averse to trading Martin, I am not sure that you need to trade both him and Orpik, but if so, so be it. We have kids who will be moving into both of their spots on the team within a year or two anyways.

Letang for 8 years, even at $56 million, would complete his career here. He should only get better, and the contract more reasonable, as it goes on. You could do worse than a team built around Crosby, Malkin and Letang for the better part of the next decade.

Personally, I'd love to trade Martin while his value is at its absolute highest. But we all know it's never going to happen. Shero loves him.

The problem I have with the notion "We have kids who will be moving into both of their spots on the team within a year or two anyways", is what that REALLY means is one or two more seasons of picking up scraps off the UFA bin who will step into the lineup instead of the kids.

As much as I am not a fan of Orpik and Martin, I'd rather play them than the unknown dude Shero is sure to pick up because his coach is hesitant about the talents of Harrington, Dumoulin, Maatta and especially Pouliot.

Not really no. I don't like his cap hit, I want more physicality and/or points from my $5 million blueliners. But it's more than that. He sucks on the left side, which means we can never play our two best defensemen together...and whenever we have, they've really sucked.

I much prefer keeping Letang.

Even if we resign Letang, we won't have to move Martin. But if we did, it wouldn't be until after next season anyways.

Like the physicality Orpik had when he was giving up goals or the points Letang was putting up between giving up goals? Martin was our best D-man this year at actually playing defense.

Exactly! I couldn't imagine losing him to get into a bidding war for someone who plays just like him. It would drive me nuts.

True but right now thay are good viable options...

If Letang isn't traded and the defense is shaped like this I would be glad... Some teams are in cap trouble not really the Pens...

Letang-Despres
Martin-Orpik
Niskanen-Dumoulin
Bortuzzo

Not a great defense but not the worst one...

Niskanen needs to be moved. We can't afford a $2.3m third pairing defensemen.

I could do without Niskanen. Too much money for a 3rd pairing guy and not impressive enough to be a top 4. I would rather keep Murray and trade Niskanen

We need some one with a great hockey sense ans speed to play with Sid.. Brière would be perfect or Brunner... We need skill... Kunitz is the grit...

Our third line or Sutter Kennedy Cooke is really good to me... One guy I would add to 4th line and great PK guy is Max Lapierre... 4Th line needs energy and speed like Lapierre and Vitale...

A Pk of Cooke, Sutter, Lapierre, Vitale gets the job done...

I may not have been clear.

If the cost of keeping Martin/Orpik is Letang, I am not averse to moving them if we need to. I do not want to move either. But both are fairly short term solutions for us given what is coming up through the system, and Letang should be part of the core for the rest of Crosby and Malkin's careers. Anyone who thinks that we have another Letang just waiting for a roster spot is fooling themselves. There are not many Letangs in the NHL. It would be like saying we have some talented forwards, lets let Crosby and Malkin go.

Yeah I know how defensive lapses. He is only 26 though, those can improve. Or if not, pair him with a defensively responsible guy like we did with Gonchar.

I am looking long term, not short.

One more thought, as far as the money for Letang goes.

There are going to be quite a few buyouts, players who will be paid a lot before they collect a dime from a new team. They might be agreeable to a cheapy contract from the Pens. There will be opportunites out there, which I would think Shero could take advantage of.

a fine sentiment but i can't conceive of a scenario in which the cost of keeping Martin would be Letang. also can't get behind treading Martin and Orpik as if they were interchangeable because their roles and the availability of replacement players is vastly different.

I think this offseason, much like a long sea voyage, is starting to make some of our posters insane.

But seriously, dumping Martin because his value is high? It's high because he has a lot of value. Two more years of Martin is exactly what we need to give our younger guys time to develop. And he's one of a handful of D partners that makes Orpik into a functional player. Just praise all that's holy that he got his mojo back, and let's hope he can keep it up.

And buying out JJ? Did someone seriously post that? He's the only guy in our bottom 6 that can slide up into any slot and be effective. He's a bargain at 2.1, especially when you consider the other options out there.

If we're giving TK 2 mil, it's because there is literally no place else to put that money and come up with a winger who can skate and chew gum at the same time. Shero is not completely dim. He's not going to qualify the guy if he has a better option.
