Flames to throw "big bucks" at Bryan Bickell?

Pure speculation, but take it for what it's worth. Flames GM Jay Feaster has made it clear he wants to make his team "tougher" to play against. Bickell will be his ideal target. Plus ownership have also made it abundantly clear they have no interest in waiting 3-5 years for their prospects to develop.

Expect a 5 year offer in the $4.5 - 5 million/year range.

3 years 4 million per is most likely what we offer.

That would be Feaster's most hilarious contract yet.

Bickell's a good player, but he doesn't deserve to be paid anything even close to Ryan Callahan, let alone better than Callahan.

Rumor prefixes should only be used when a rumor from a legitimate source is being used. Speculation would be the correct prefix here. Edited.

Not sure that will get it done. There will be significant interest in this player, plus Calgary isn't exactly the destination of choice for most players. Calgary will have to overpay.

And 4 million a year isn't a vast overpayment

you know for sure there will be a GM who will roll the dice and sign this guy to big bucks. There is one every year and sometimes it works and sometimes not. It does happen every year though.....

I'm sure somebody will offer him $4 million, the Flames will then have to counter with $4.5 - 5.

In case you haven't noticed, players aren't exactly lining up to sign with Calgary. It's the exact opposite actually, Corban Knight notwithstanding.

I wouldn't be to happy paying him that.

Ward, Bergenheim, and Pisani we have seen this story before, it generally doesn't end well for paying the big playoff performer.

I think I agree, The Flames would have to give something extra on his deal for him to go there. It wont be easy to get guys to sign in calgary for the next few years.....

That guy will never learn...just swallow the medicine and rebuild. Bickell is a glorified third liner.

I'd say it ends pretty well for the performer, but not the team that overpays him.

I hope he does this. CGY would have many issues in the future. I like Bickell....but 5M AAV? Too much.

We are rebuilding but someone has to play until the kids are ready.

Anything above $3.5M per is simply too much for Bickell, and I really like the guy.

True and good clarification on the point. I understand why these guys want to cash in, just hoping my team isn't a part of the sweepstakes and at that price I would think the Wings drop out. That is a reckless contract being proposed by the OP.

I actually think if Calgary is going to overpay someone it is going to be hitting Filppula's demands. They will reunite him and Hudler who have a lot of chemistry, wish him luck if it comes to that, but paying him 5 million dollars and probably a little more is over-payment and that is kind of where I expect him to wind up.

Your drunk for proposing that contract, and they'd be drunk to do it as well. One playoff run does not make a guy worth 5 mill!!!

If Calgary is willing to do that for Bickell, I fear that they may offer Bozak his desired 5.5M too...

If Feaster wants to make the team more difficult to play against, then he should step down and allow a quality GM to build the team.

You must be new to watching the NHL. It happens every year, someone has a good run into the playoffs and then a good playoff, and then he hit it big on July 1st....

GM Feaster says Flames “have to win” at draft, in free agency

Quote:
"I don't know that it's feeling the pressure as much as it is recognizing the importance of it," Feaster said Friday at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Quote:
"There's no question it's big-time competition off the ice," Feaster said. "Yes, as a franchise, we have to win.
Quote:
Calgary's current needs are size and talent at centre, more size on their third defensive pairing, plus a shooting right-winger to replace Iginla, Feaster said.
Quote:
"We have to get bigger and we have to get harder to play against," the GM said.
Quote:
Feaster fought the term "rebuild" as he traded away the team's captain and top defenceman during the season. He joked Friday that via "therapy" he's accepted that rebuilding is what Flames are doing.
Quote:
His intention, however, is to make that process as short and as painless as possible.

FITW I thin Chicago will match anything south of 3.5 million. 4.5 million would be a high contract (overpayment but so is every FA) But I will bet someone will throw 5 million X 5 years at him
