NFL taking NHL's 'fantasy' format for Pro Bowl

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 12m
NFL eliminated traditional AFC-NFC Pro Bowl matchup; will be replaced with Pro-Bowl fantasy-like draft, per ESPN sources.

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 10m
Now players will be assigned to teams through the Pro Bowl Draft (really). Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will be draft captains.

This league takes a lot of crap for lockouts, being in the 'wrong' markets, etc etc.

But so often they find themselves ahead of the game...

The Pro Bowl is such a useless event. They should do it the week before the Super Bowl.

Do they even have events like 40 yard dash, longest kick, etc. ?

they mustve seen TSN's ratings for the all-star draft, figure they can do similarly well in USA with NFL fans.

considering the pro-bowl is even more publicly maligned than the nhl, nba, or mlb all-star games, i guess they figured any change is an improvement.

what the nfl really needs is a marquee skills competition. NBA has the dunk comp. MLB has the homerun derby. NHL has a few that interest the fans, the biggest being hardest shot. NFL has **** of any interest due to the nature of the sport.

They do have the quarterback challenge that they do televise but it's not associated with the pro-bowl. Maybe that's something they should change but aside from that I can't really see anything else being of interest.

QB challenge.
Kicker challenge. Top five kickers see how far back they can kick, last one standing wins.
Rushing challenge. Top five players with rushing yards (I think that's a thing) see how quickly they can go from certain points.

Would be good things to introduce I think.

The next Pro Bowl is on NBC. From 2015 through 2022, it will be on ESPN.

Was this NBC Sports' idea to the NFL, since NBC Sports holds the US rights to the NHL ASG?

So it'll be Team Jerry Rice vs. Team Deion Sanders.

Just make it a flag football competition, and I might watch for the spectacle.

As it is now though, football (to me) is the sport that loses the absolute most when the players are obviously playing without their edge. Changing how the teams are made might make for a quirky entertainment spectacle like the NHL's, but it'll just be a gimmick.

The last thing the NFL needs to to even further stroke the ego of Deion Sanders, one of the NFL's all time great corners (and also one of the NFL's all time great egomaniacs).

He'll name the team "Team Deion Sanders" and have his face on the team helmet and then sometime in the game, he will disappear and "Leon Sandcastle" will come out for Team Deion Sanders, making the game even more of a mockery.

I'll be honest, was impressed that the NHL changed the All-Star distribution to a Draft format, this makes it more interesting and fun, gives players a chance to play with guys from different conferences.

Glad to see the NFL follow suit, though I don't watch the Pro-Bowl, it's boring as ****.

Still, it's to stroke his already massive ego.

That would actually be sweet if legends played in the all-star game, any sport.
