High profile buyouts

With all the high profile buyouts and rumored buyouts, do you think the Canucks are contemplating a Luongo buyout?

He clearly stated his contract "sucks", and it is preventing other teams from making a trade bid.

Thoughts?

I think Vancouver will buy him out at the last possible moment for buyouts. They can wait till next year but I think they will have trouble this offseason in making any moves with him still on the roster.

well Briere, Bryzgalov, and Lecavalier are all confirmed to be on the chopping block. I think Lou will definitely have a spot light on him from the brass. if he isn't moved by the end of the draft I think he gets bought out.

it will be interesting. I still think Luongo is an elite goalie in the NHL, hard to imagine a team wouldn't take him at $5.3mil.
That said with the recapture rule Vancouver should buy him out.

Not hard to imagine at all. He's signed at that 5.3M for like...forever...and he's not getting any younger.

If the Canucks are forced into buying Loungo out, I do think the Islanders might be willing to trade Dipietro(who is a cheaper payout) to them while giving them a small return(read that not 15th pick or Niederrieter, Strome, etc)

Strait 50% retained? Could use some depth defense on the cheap.

FWIW, I don't think Luongo clears waivers.

probably not, but I do believe that option is open if nobody takes him on waivers(I could be wrong because I know Loungo's actual salary(which is 1.4M higher then his caphit) will scare the Islanders off a bit)

I wish I could have all the time I spent arguing with Nucks fans about Luongo's value back.

If you're referring to Brian Strait, he makes $775K/per for the next 3 years. I don't think retaining any of his salary is going to make much of a difference.

Every little bit counts; Canucks are going to be tight to the cap.

Fair enough. I just scratched my head a little because it was Strait and he makes peanuts.

Well, interesting but I think the reason Luongo cant be moved has more to do with the length of his contract than the $$ value. Doesn't Dipietro still have what seems to be eternity left on his contract? They would almost be in the same predicament. Who would be willing to take on Dipietro at this point?

Didn't think there was a chance before.

However, after seeing Lecavalier being bought out, it gives some serious precedent for all GMs to go to their owners and say, "hey, why can't we?". Certainly allows Gillis to go ahead with a Luongo buyout.

Absolutely not ! Although his contract is ridiculously long, he's cap hit is $5.3 M.

That's very little considering what other goalies are getting paid:

Rinne: $7M
Price: $6.5M
Lehtonen: $5.9M
Lunqvist: $6.8M
Miller: $6.2M
Ward: $6.3M
Quick: $5.8M

Those numbers are CAP HIT
