This is just the fans and the media making a story out of nothing. The only facts we know is that Nonis said everyone's in play, but there hasn't been any discussion about moving Phaneuf. Not much you can really take from that. Obviously every GM will listen to any proposition from another team...it doesn't mean that he's actively shopping everyone or willing to trade them for the best offer available.
The hole Phaneuf would create would far exceed the maximum possible return we could likely get for him. It would devastate our 5-on-5 play, our powerplay, and our penalty kill and we'd likely spend more money on worse options in this years UFA market trying to fill all those holes.
If the other team valued Phaneuf as much as some here do, it would be dumb for Nonis not to listen.
There's a differnce between his value to the team and his value in a trade. Leafs D is atrocious without Dion. Also Rielly is a top prospect, but people need to stop treating him as a guaranteed elite d man. He wouldn't be the first highly drafted D to fall short of expectations (Schenn, E. Johnson, J. Johnson, Z. Bogosian, V. Hedman, etc.)
It's just something to stir up interest maybe get the phone ringing. I doubt Nonis trades Dion unless it's a massive over payment and I doubt there would be teams lining up to do that.
That said It is smart on Dave's part. If/when people start calling about Dion, Nonis listens declines and tries to make a move with players he's actually got on the market. Creating interest where there is no interest is pretty normal in sports.
I do not believe one word of this speculation. The Leafs want to add to the D not subtract, especially their top minute defenseman. I believe the rumour about Reimer going to Edmonton before any Dion deal.
HOWEVER, Edmonton makes so much sense it hurts. He's from Edmonton, they need to upgrade their D, and they're at the point in their team's development cycle where they need to add experience. They have a glut of young players to move, not to mention that the #7 pick would likely be involved.
Edmonton could use a dman, and there was that whole Nonis talking to Oilers GM for 10 minutes. If we HAD to trade him, I wouldn't mind that deal. I would just rather not trade him. I wonder if RNH would be available in a swap though.
