This is just the fans and the media making a story out of nothing. The only facts we know is that Nonis said everyone's in play, but there hasn't been any discussion about moving Phaneuf. Not much you can really take from that. Obviously every GM will listen to any proposition from another team...it doesn't mean that he's actively shopping everyone or willing to trade them for the best offer available.

The hole Phaneuf would create would far exceed the maximum possible return we could likely get for him. It would devastate our 5-on-5 play, our powerplay, and our penalty kill and we'd likely spend more money on worse options in this years UFA market trying to fill all those holes.

There's a differnce between his value to the team and his value in a trade. Leafs D is atrocious without Dion. Also Rielly is a top prospect, but people need to stop treating him as a guaranteed elite d man. He wouldn't be the first highly drafted D to fall short of expectations (Schenn, E. Johnson, J. Johnson, Z. Bogosian, V. Hedman, etc.)

Not a 6.5-7mil defenceman IMO. Lets leave it at that.

I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE a Phaneuf+Riemer for Schenn bro's deal.

Yeah, though we'd have to probably move up a little to get Nurse.

It's just something to stir up interest maybe get the phone ringing. I doubt Nonis trades Dion unless it's a massive over payment and I doubt there would be teams lining up to do that.

That said It is smart on Dave's part. If/when people start calling about Dion, Nonis listens declines and tries to make a move with players he's actually got on the market. Creating interest where there is no interest is pretty normal in sports.

Yet the consensus on the main board, and this years Norris voting, is he is the league's 11th best dman. So lets get rid of a top 10 dman because he wants top 10 money? Give your head a shake.

I do not believe one word of this speculation. The Leafs want to add to the D not subtract, especially their top minute defenseman. I believe the rumour about Reimer going to Edmonton before any Dion deal.

Both irrelevant. It's an opinion. Deal with it.

Only way we give up Phaneuf is if we get Scuderi

I am not a fan of trading Phaneuf.

HOWEVER, Edmonton makes so much sense it hurts. He's from Edmonton, they need to upgrade their D, and they're at the point in their team's development cycle where they need to add experience. They have a glut of young players to move, not to mention that the #7 pick would likely be involved.

That's the same thing that popped into my head.

Edmonton could use a dman, and there was that whole Nonis talking to Oilers GM for 10 minutes. If we HAD to trade him, I wouldn't mind that deal. I would just rather not trade him. I wonder if RNH would be available in a swap though.

Its idiotic to get rid of a top player just because he wants what he's worth. Thank god Nonis is the GM.

The only way I'd give up Phaneuf is if we're getting an even better defenceman in return.

Yeah, Edmonton seems to make sense now that I think about it. Mac-T is looking to improve now, they need a vet dman, and Phaneuf would be going home.

Something around the 7th pick and some young players (not Gagner though unless he's flipped please).

@DarrenDreger: To be fair, Toronto would trade Lupul, JVR and just about any player if the return is good enough. All unlikely scenarios.

Can we close this thread now?

Move him in to COL in a deal for Statsny, Phanuef/Statsny as the main components, wit other minor pieces going back and forth.

Gardiner and Franson can be the Leafs top Pair, especially on a nice young team like this.

Give Lupul the "C".

Not enough from the Oilers POV.

A more plausible deal:

phaneuf + 21st
for
Klefbom, 7th, Gagner

A deal for a top four defenceman would need to precede the move.

Which as I said is maybe 10 guys in the league. Only half of which are worth what you'd have to pay to upgrade. Better move is to just add a number 2 than side step with your #1.

LOL oh my goodness..

Holy.

Phaneuf will NOT be traded, our D becomes AHL level without him. Gardiner and Franson can be the Leafs top pair? I have no words. Honestly.

You'd think Phaneuf was no better than Ryan O'Byrne with some posters "opinions".
