Philly/Buff proposal

to: Philly Ryan Miller, Jay MCkee, 2nd, 3rd

To Buffalo: Pitkanen, justin williams

Would the Flyers part with Joni for a franchise goalie of the future?

I think it is close to fair, really close, Philly might lose but by a vary slim margin.

Pitaken is the future. Scouts say he's like Nick Lidstrom, only he hits harder. Scary, ain't it?

They could easily get someone like DiPetrio from the Isles for less (Hackett and a first would sway Mad Mike) or Blackburn.

Miller is a franchise goaltender also, Pitkanen is going to have to show me more then a few games in pre season before his name comes up with Lidstrom.

The Flyers wouldn't do this deal, and why would the Sabres part with Miller for a totally unproven player?

Because they have two other good young goaltenders and they may like to take risks

Ah yes but Miller is the top prospect. Moot point though because this deal would never happen.

I would do it from a Sabres point of view. Think about it. Sure we give up what could be the best goalie of the three we have. But we may not. Noronen might still be the best. So may Biron. And with the addition of Pitkanen, our defense would seem pretty stable for years to come with Pitkanen, Kalinin, Tallinder, and Campbell leading the blueline. Justin Williams would be another young forward with good skill, possibly opening up the possibility of the Sabres then trading someone like Brown or Dumont for more defensive depth or whatever. Once again, I would do it, but I don't know if Philly would.

IMO Buffalo gives up way too much. let's break it down.

McKee == Williams (roughly)
Pitkanen > Miller by a *very* small margin....

and, IMO

McKee + 3rd > Williams
Miller + 2nd > Pitkanen.

Sabres take a hit on value, but it does address their needs. IMO, a fairer deal would involve swapping McKee for Zhitnik, and losing the 2nd round pick.

last yr at the draft when the B's asked for DiPietro,Mad Mike wasn't swayed and insisted on Samsonov.

DiPietro's cheap($1.8m),the nyi think he's nhl ready and the owner has said keep the core together.

again why are the nyi trading DiPietro for 33/34 yr old Hackett, making $3m and a draft pick who's a few yrs from contributing?

I think McKee's trade value's higher then Williams.A young,cheap, talented blueliner's hard to get.

But how many are top quality franchise goalies. From the sounds of it that is what you would get with Miller. The question is is it harder to get the franchise goalie or the franchise D-man. I think you have to say goalie as there are just plain less of them.

I doubt the Sabres will move Miller in almost any deal, even one like this.

I doubt the Flyers move Pitkanen in any deal. Neither side likes what they give up.

I would probably include Williams in the unlikely to be moved bucket as well.

They all suck too, you have no future in nets, that Czech goaltender may end up beinga good #1 but I wouldn't really count on it.

Which doesn't change the fact that this deal is never going to happen any time soon. If the Flyers were looking to make a deal for a (possible) franchise goalie, they wouldn't have signed Jeff Hackett right out of the gate on the beginning of UFA. But they did, which indicates they're not actively in the market for a goaltender, certainly not one that would play in the minors this year at the expense of players that will contribute and make a difference on the NHL club. I would love for the Flyers to go out and get a young stud prospect that we can all point to and say "he's the man for this franchise." But it ain't gonna happen in the near future. Just because you or I or anyone else in this thread thinks that they should means nothing when it's clear that management doesn't think so.

Is Miller any more proven than Pitkannen?? I'd just as soon keep Justin also. Both teams have a logjam in goal.

Am I the only one that likes this deal?

The flyers have plenty of young guys on D w/ top 4 potential (Woywitka, Seidenberg, etc.)... Pitkanen is obviously the best guy, but they get a potential franchis goalie back for the potential franchise d-man (they replace their loss of Maxime Oueltte)

From a flyers perspective my answer is a definative NO. Not because I don't think the deal is pretty close, though I do rank Pitkanen quite a bit higher than Miller, but that's a different story. #1 defenseman are the hardest thing to find and Joni has that written all over him. He's what the Flyers need and have needed since Mark Howe. And as for Williams for Mckee, I wouldn't do that either. Willy is the type of player that does everything so that his team will win. He'll take a huge hit to make a play, he's great on the forecheck, already a great two-way winger, and he's only getter better.

As a Flyers Fan I would have to turn this offer down. It's not too far off value wise.

Young goalies are much more difficult to project than position players. Also goalies generally take much longer to develop.

Another factor is that a true dominant #1 defenseman may be the toughest thing to find, and you don't give that player up when you find him.
