Shattenkirk signs 4 years for $4.25M a year and, allegedly, Gagner won't take $4.5M for the same term ... amazing.

I'm just hoping he wants a ridiculous amount and MacT is forced to move him. Too risky to overpay him that much.

Looking forward to Gagner being locked up long term and being a BIG part of the Oiler return to greatness.

even though i disagree, Shattenkirk is a far superior player in his position than Sam Gagner is.

Still would be nice for someone to give us a break. I'm sick of paying everyone a million too much to stay.

Smid would have commanded 4 million per easily on the open market. Before we re-signed him he was considered to be one of the best defensemen available this summer.

I suspect there's a bit of bad blood after last summer's negotiations. Gagner feels he took a big step forward and proved himself and now deserves a big contract.

And yet nothing changed except the length of the season.

Yep. Our top dman last year was also only paid the 5th most. 1.75 is damn cheap for a top 4 dman

The thing with Sam is there's no way he'd fetch more than 4.5 on the UFA market anyways so I don't know why we have to overpay him given what Anisimov and Shattenkirk signed for today. I'd rather have both of those guys on this team than him.

We have enough wingers on this team and he's not good enough at the centre position to be a true centre.

If he really turned down 4 years at 4.5 I really think that should be it for him here. Time to go shopping.

Gagner is not a third line player, yet everyone here wants him to embody not only 2C qualities, but 3C as well. Checking roles and defense-first players are what comprise a 3rd line these days, something Gagner will likely never be. But what Gagner is, is a decent 2C who can score and work hard doing it. Patrick Kane was the Hawks 2C in the cup final. Don't see anyone complaining about his size or defense playing against the prototypical size/defense team.

All I see are people here moving goal posts on Gagner, slagging him because he's not of the ilk of Toews or Datsyuk. Fact is he doesn't have to be. We'll find someone to fill that 3C who embodies all those characteristics that you want Gagner to have. Then Gagner can focus on scoring points and flipping you the bird every time he does it.

If we find someone to replace Gagner, it doesn't push him to 3C. That would be a horrible misuse for the reasons presented in this thread. It would just make him expendable. Gagner is not a 3rd liner. Gagner is not a checker. The obsession with defensive ability/board play/etc are just that.. obsessions. While there is definitely room for improvement in these areas, they are not as important as his faceoff percentage and continued production.
Being defensively responsible and having the ability to win a face-off isn't a 3rd line center quality.

It's a center quality.

And I would argue that the obsession with putting up points is far more of an obsession.

Smid's last deal was very hometown friendly.

So was Petry's.

Don't be surprised when he not signed going into the weekend. He's being traded on Sunday, and his new team can deal with that.

Yep. I have a feeling that's where things are headed to if Sam thinks he's with more than 4.5 for 4 years. Making negotiations public seems to be a favorite Oiler MO before guys get shipped out. Hope the return is decent.

There's a difference between asking a center to be defensively responsible and expecting them to shut down the other teams' forwards, which is what many posters here complain about Gagner not doing. Gagner backchecks hard and he does all those things that a good center is asked of him. He is responsible in both ends of the ice, and where that responsibility ends is not giving the opposing team odd man rushes and keeping those neutral zone passes to a minimum. Don't get me wrong, he's not the best at this by any means.

Did you see how badly Krueger handled our centers this year? It was a disaster and every single one of our centers suffered. It's unfair to call out Gagner on his defensive zone coverage when Krueger had him sitting at the freakin' blueline with the slot wide open.

His offensive stats are what's going to keep him alive in this league. They are not overrated by any stretch of the imagination when it comes to Gagner. Remove his production and yes, then he becomes Horcoff V2.0. But that's highly unlikely considering his career so far.

I`m ready to trade the guy.

Just make sure the return is fair. This is not a deal to lose on. Better to pay him and hold on to him then.

How many centres have a well developed defensive game at age 23? Not very many. We can afford to wait, it won't get worse. I especially think Eakins could help in this regard.
