Hits and Shot blocks

Hits and Block stats in general are skewed because you can only register one when you don't have the puck, so guys without the puck rack up hits and blocks. What about if you look at hits/blocks per min without the puck?

I used Corsi% as a proxy for possession time ( (1-CF%) * TOI = TWP) and figured out how many hits/blocks a player register per min without the puck. I only used away data as some arenas pad the stats of the home team.

Here are the top 30 for each.

Not sure if this is interesting/useful, or if I just re-invented the square wheel. Some players that jumped out to me on the blocked shots list are Andre Benoit, not exactly a know shot blocker and Kaberle/Vatanen(though probably just a sample size issue).

I have written before on the topic of shot blocking (see link below).
http://www.broadstreethockey.com/201...blocking-shots

I have come to the conclusion that shot blocking is a more or less useless skill that is completely overrated. Shot blocking may be useful when blocking shot attempts from close in, but since a majority of blocked shots originate from the point, the data shows no value to blocking shots at a higher rate.

As with all other stats/analysis I like to ask two fundamental questions.

1.) Is it repeatable? ie, if a player ranks highly over one time period, is it likely they'll rank highly in future time periods?

and, if the answer is yes,

2.) Is it correlated (either positively or negatively) with winning on a team level? ie, if I assemble a team of players who are good in this metric will it help, hinder, or be irrelevant to my chances of winning?

I'm not sure about the repeatable nature of this statistic (would be fairly easy to pull past years data and check the correlation between performance from say 07-09 with performance from 10-12 or similar) however I believe that most of Cuneen's work in the other blocking thread has hinted that the answer to the second is that there's virtually no impact on goal differential (which is itself very highly correlated with team quality)

Does anybody know where I can view hits leaders in the NHL by season? I'm having some trouble finding anything prior to this season.

Hits are listed under "Real-Time Stats" at NHL.com

Correction Hatterson, I looked at it's correlation to Shot differentials. But you got the gist of it right, there doesn't seem to be much value in blocking shots
