Worst team name in hockey?

What led me to this topic was being reminded of the existence of the Peterborough Petes. There is no creativity in the name, there is no threat in the name and it is impossible to express the name in a logo.

Dishonorable mention to the Fayetteville FireAntz of the SPHL. Fire Ants would be an OK name, but the way they do it is a nightmare both when it comes to grammar and spelling.

Minnesota Wild.

Wild...what? What's wild? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Why would you pick an adjective as a team name?!

It isn't hockey, but I just have to throw a vote in there for the newly formed CFL Ottawa Redblacks. So bad it's worthy of invading "worst team name" topics from other sports.

To be fair, it's also a noun

noun
20.
Often, wilds. an uncultivated, uninhabited, or desolate region or tract; waste; wilderness; desert: a cabin in the wild; a safari to the wilds of Africa.

Given the logos emphasis on the natural features of MN, I'd wager this is what the team's name is pointing towards.

I'm not picking on them, I love their team, but I have always thought that the Blue Jackets could've gone with something else. Hard to make a logo, hard to have a mascot, makes it almost impossible to go to a different color scheme if they ever wanted to...I don't know. I'm sure a lot with disagree with me, but it was the first team that came to mind when I read this.

It took me an unforgivably long time to realize Blue Jackets was a reference to the American Civil War and not insects.

Worst name is the St. George Cool-FM of the LNAH. Corporate sponsorship at it's best.

In your defense, our mascot (A giant hornet named Stinger) doesn't make it easy on you

I dislike pretty much any team name that isn't pluralised.

And I hate to say it, but "Canucks" would not have been my first choice for my teams name.

KC Scouts anyone?

Most team names are pretty, eh? (Blues, Red Wings, Penguins, Ducks, Kings)

No team really puts fear into their name, but the closest would probably be the Blackhawks, Hurricanes, Whalers, Thrashers, Panthers, Lightning

Oilers, Flames, Senators, Jets, Maple Leafs make sense.

Canucks? Every canadian team is a "canuck".
Canadiens? French version of canuck.

That is all.

It is either the best or the worst but jus want to throw it in to the conversation:
THE MACON WHOOPEE. Real team, defunct now but definitely an unusual name....

Back from around 1995-2005, the lower level leagues all had a bunch of teams with "ice" in their names. Lake Charles Ice Pirates, Corpus Christi IceRays, Knoxville Ice Bears, Austin Ice Bats, Adirondack Ice Hawks, and so on.

The only one that didn't sound forced was the Chesapeake Icebreakers.

Funny story time.

My aunt is from Texas and when I was younger (like 10?) I was on the phone with her and told her I had decorated my room in a Senators theme.

She promptly responded "Ooooooooohh, cool. Like John McCain?"
