Some of the 2013 - 2017 USA Rule changes

Some of the rule changes to take effect as the 2013 amateur hockey seasons begin.

Boarding, charging, and head contact will be called the same as checking from behind...
minor plus misconduct,, major plus game misconduct, or match penalty.

Specifically adds slew footing to the tripping rule.

All on ice officials have to wear half shield.

4 years till next rule changes, instead of the customary 2 years.

And, our Canadian friends have decided to follow USA Hockey and make Pee Wee and below as non checking.

The pussification or our great game continues....

Pussification?

How about the fact that they're making the game safer?

As an official I really dislike the mandatory visors.

I don't like the mandatory visors for refs rule, but I'm glad to see they are actually making stiffer penalties for head contact.

I disagree with the no checking in bantam and up, but I think higher level pee-wee teams need checking early on. One of the trends I'm noticing with youth hockey these days is head down play. The kids aren't conditioned to look for hits, and are keeping their heads down as a result. I see a lot of accidental collision going on, and I feel it's important to teach children how to hit correctly, how to look for hits, and how to avoid hits early on. Even in jr hockey I see a lot of guys keeping their heads down when they have the puck. You can tell a kid to keep his head up all you want, but unless you re-enforce that, they have no consequences early on to remind them to keep their head up, until it's too late and someone gets hurt.

Just my opinion.
