I know Mike Keenan made a statement about Kipper not being expected to play out that final season, but he's been an inflammatory silly person ever since he started doing media gigs. Especially when it comes to the Flames.
This is the first of the cap circumventing contracts to play out to fruition though; that is, with the player retiring before the joke year(s) kick in.

I wouldn't be shocked if Bettman, with the support of the BoG, took this opportunity to set a tone for discouraging cap circumvention under the new CBA.

I think if there's even a slight risk of this happening, Flames will just buy out the last year of Kipper's contract. They have close to 25 million in capspace with only a few minor RFA signings when Kipper retires, and his buyout would just be:

2013-14: $4,833,333
2014-15: $500,000

edit: They don't even need to waste one of the amnesty buyouts on that.

Kipper's contract was only 6 years. That rule only occurs if the contracts is 7 years or longer.

They've already put in measures to prevent strong cap circumvention. The lowest year in a player's salary can only be 50% of the highest year; there's no such thing as a throwaway year anymore.

Shame to see him hang em' up. Always enjoyed watching him. Great goalie and one of the best over the last decade. Best of luck to him.

Best goalie in the NHL when considering all of the last 10 years. Only Broduer can make another case.

They thought they had a good system last CBA too.

I don't necessarily expect the NHL to go after the Flames here but after they sanctioned New Jersey for the Kovalchuk deal, I also wouldn't be shocked if they did.

This one snuck up on me. It seemed like he went from being one of the better goalies in the league to retired in a flash.

To say it's been swell to be able to watch the Kipper show all these years would be an understatement. Cheers for all the memories. May "Shirts off for Kiprusoff" live in Calgary infamy.

Very excited now for the emergence of the next Finnish goalie.

Kipper seems to say **** you to Calgary!

Great goalie...great career and sorry Feaster handcuffed the Flames and could not get you a Championship.

Sad to see him go. I've been a fan of his for almost 2 decades, so this is a hard pill to swallow. Only a few of those childhood heroes remain, like Saku Koivu and Kimmo Timonen.

Feaster did not handcuff the Flames, Darryl Sutter did.

Had some great battles with the flames during the mid 2000's, and Kipper was a big part of that. Always hated the guy, but It was a fun rivalry and I wish him the best.

So now we're hating on Feaster for stuff that isn't even his fault?
