I'm really under educated when it comes to business end of hockey. Does this mean that they were RFAs that the Sharks had to offer contracts to in order to keep? So Grants and Heems were not made an offer then? What does this mean for Heems and the Bulls if he signs with another NHL team?

There was, but he's cheap and I'm guessing they think they can get everything straightened out. There's likely no harm if it turns out they can't, so why not try. The kid has talent and might make a solid third liner in the NHL someday.

Depends on that other NHL team's plans for him. If they do not have an ECHL affiliate, and he falls that far in their depth chart, the Bulls might get him to play in orange again. (Or the Bulls might sign him to an ECHL deal.)

It also depends on affiliate arrangement with Sharks, whether they "promise" two goalies or what.

He's gone from the SJ organization. The only way he could play for the Bulls is if he signs with them or if he signed with another NHL/AHL organization and was loaned to SF.

#SJSharks say RFA Tyler Kennedy was qualified by PIT, and that transfers to San Jose. He remains an RFA who needs to be signed.

Capgeek has Matsumoto and Pelech listed as UFA's. Were they RFA's? If so, it looks like they weren't given qualifying offers.

Then they must be group VI UFAs.

They would both qualify if they so choose to. Matsumoto won't be re-signed so it doesn't matter if he's RFA or UFA.

I'm sure you're right but I could just see the Sharks messing up and in a few days T.K. who they just traded for becomes a free agent.

I'm sure they crossed their T's and dotted their I's but still it would be hilarious and sad at the same time.

In theory they could re-sign him now for less than his QO, right? I mean, they won't, but they could.

I think it is that he was qualifed, and the QO carries over, not that he signed the contract. So, not accepted.

then kennedys quote seems out of place, considering.

if he wanted to sign he couldve just accepted his QO...didnt need to speak with DW at all.

QOs had to be made not later than 7/2 2pm PT. (All things being equal, the QO will expire 7/20.)

The options now are...
  • Accept QO (which is usually much lower than a highly valued player is worth; 0-10% raise, max)
  • Go to arbitration (player deadline 7/10; 7/11 deadline for team to take player to arbitration)
  • Sign Offer sheet (from team other than SJ); Sharks can either "match" the offer sheet or accept compensation (draft picks)
  • Negotiate a deal
  • Player hold out

So what if a team just wants to be a dick and offersheets Kennedy for 3 mill or something outrageous and the Sharks don't wanna match? The Sharks would get a draft pick I think but that wouldn't help them this year and they'd be down another forward.

I'm pretty sure they could. Plus a qualifying offer doesn't have to be the final contract either, both sides can continue to negotiate if they choose to.

No. "Right now" (until 7/5 9am pt) the only signable players are your own UFAs.

RFAs after 7/5 can negotiate new deal (above or below QO) or "accept" QO or go to arbitration.

While a draft pick wouldn't help them for a few years, Kennedy's definitely not worth 3 million.

Wouldn't Heemskerk be a UFA?

Yes, but as they did not QO him, they have to wait until 7/5 before they can "re-"sign him.

It is very common for RFAs to wait to as long as the end of July. This is particularly true for guys who are not minimum type (<$1mil) guys.

Patience.
