Not all the goalies that are 'reportedly' on the market are actually on the market. Rumors are started to apply pressure to the trade partners. This is just the result of the fact that SOMETHING is likely going to happen concerning some goalie(s) in the next couple of days.
Good. He'd be a fine addition to our younger crop of players (and he never should have left to begin with).
That said, is Kevin Snow really that "in the know"?

I don't think he's privy to all of the discussions going on in Regier's office BUT, at the same time, he is an employee working in the same building - so it's not impossible that internally some scuttlebutt amongst Sabre employees from hearing some tidbits happens.

Schneider's inclusion into the market certainly adds competition - but, just like Bernier, only one of the rumored suitors (Calgary, NYI, Edmonton, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Phoenix) can get him. That leaves all of the others back to evaluating what's left - and Miller is still the most proven of the field of Luongo, Bryzgalov, Nabokov, Emery, Halak and Khabibulin.
After hearing Regier's interview with Brian Duff yesterday, it does seem though that - even before the Schneider news occurred - Regier is not expecting to be able to trade either Miller or Vanek at the draft. Regier noted that he thinks most teams will want to first sift through all of the buyouts and free agency first before deciding on trading for players.
My sense is that Miller and Vanek will both still be Sabres come Monday morning and probably even well into the summer.
Maybe it's a Miller extension coming? I'm not upset if Ryan and Thomas are still Sabres as long as they are re-signed. Now if they're still on the team and not signed to an extension then I would be mad. But I'm not upset that our elite LW and top 10 goalie are still on the team.
Nothing is the one constant thing Darcy has brought the franchise during his tenure
How many other GM's have made a trade this week? Trades just are not happening yet (love that Colorado, Calgary trade though).
A lot of player movement still needs to happen this summer with free agency and teams needing to get under the cap.
I think there are a couple of factors why it is slow so far:
1. Teams want to see if they can fill their needs through free agency.
2. Teams don't want to give up 1st round draft picks this year. They have test driven the new cars and have one picked out.
I think that if there are trades involving draft picks this year they will announce it tomorrow on the draft floor. I know Bettman announced the Jordan Staal trade last year.
Inaction re: Vanek and Miller is frustrating at the moment, but I would strongly suspect that Regier learned his lesson (7/1/07) and he's not going to let his two best players walk for nothing again. They will be either extended or traded - it's not a matter of if but when.
Why no update on contract talks with them then? Why is Darcy so frustrating?
Have you spoken with them? Why do you tell us anything at all? Errrrrr!
Let's say, hypothetically, that the only "contract update" he has is that neither of them want to re-sign here. Do you really think Regier would be stupid enough to say it publicly and screw himself out of trade value?
He said he's spoken with Miller's agent and with Vanek directly. I feel pretty confident that if there's not a contract worked out by the end of the summer for either or both, a trade will be.
