I agree. Horton would be HUGE RISK. Stay away from him. Although I think he could improve our team, but not at his current price.

I think the free agent list of targets should go:

Rob Scuderi - Love the leadership and edge he brings, hopefully this year was a fluke. On either a short term or cheap deal, if he doesn't agree (which he won't) move on to...

Ron Hainsey - I'd go up to 4 years 4 to maybe 4.25 per. He just turned 32, but hasn't played nearly as many games as others nor does he play real physical... so he should be good through the contract

Ryan Whitney - Would want a short contract so he can prove himself. If healthy the best defender available

Andrew Ference - Getting to slim pickings here. Gets another top 4D that could come somewhat cheap ($3.25m or under)

Grant Clitsome - really a #5D... if it gets to this point, I think the Avs are better off not signing somebody.

Honestly I am starting to think that the best thing the Avs can do defensively is to make the defense passable so that we can build it through the draft. We were horrid last year. Siemens and Elliott are on their way. Add another prospect or two with the draft and try to keep our forward core as high scoring as possible.

If we even just barely make it into the playoffs with a passable defense and a top notch forward core, we can turn some heads and become a destination that some FA D might want to come to all the while not giving up too much for a dman.

Keep in mind...a top dman is going to cost you a Duchene or Landeskog or Mackinnon. I dont know about you guys...but they should be Avs for their careers.

Yes, and I wouldn't even mind trading Duchene for that type of D if we draft Mack. Call me crazy but this is a piece we desesperately need on our back hand.

I also agree that is what we should do. But I'm against bringing guys like Hainsey, Scuderi, or Ference. I'd rather make fill the spots with our youngsters instead.

Which is why I want the Avs to take a short term gamble on Whitney, if he can stay healthy he is a top-pairing defender and immediately improves the PP. We would get a legitimate PPQB. If he doesn't work out, he is gone the next year.

He's the only one with Boyle I would see fitting this team.

I'd like Boyle, but don't want to give up the assets it would require to get him. Yep, I'm being cheap.

It might not cost us plenty because he has 1 year left on his contract and becomes UFA. BTW, what would you pay up for whitney?

Roughly what I expected (I figured 4.5 per). Good deal for the Blues if he continues to be a 40 point middle pairing defensemen.

It'll be interesting to see what Pietrangelo gets, I think that the Flyers will be offersheeting him if he hits the market.

I find it interesting that they didn't go for a bridge deal.

also only 4 years... no UFA years, and straight to UFA.

I'm sure that is how they got the 4.25m instead of a higher number. A bridge deal wouldn't be agreed to without more compensation (since they would know the next contract eats UFA years) and any used up UFA years cost money. I think the deal eats 1 UFA year though.

yeah, but when they have to pay him again... it's gonna cost like a mother. cause you know Philly is gonna toss out a crazy offer.

A buddy proposed this trade to me.

Tavares for 1st overall + Stastny + Siemens.

I told him no because I personally feel like that's a huge addition on the Avs side. I just wanted to hear some others opinions.

One of the few times Quantity > Quality. Avs lose that trade and Isles don't make the trade probably.

We can't afford to make an offer like that and lose out on a player that hopefully shouldn't be much worse than Tavares.

Pretty much... when Scuderi and Hainsey are the 2 best, you know it is an incredibly weak class.
