Habs just drafted a whole lot of big, physical and nasty players. I don't think MB is interested in guys like Pouliot or Stalberg. Im sure he is interested in skilled players, just with some sandpaper as well.

And Desharnais. I like the fact that Bergevin doesn't wait like Gainey use too but this is the type of stuff we are going to have to live with when the GM gives extensions during the season

Gill wasn't the most physical of players, despite his big frame. His mobility was always a sour point too. I'd take him over Bouillon, though, definitely.

Hal Gill is more of a teddy bear. Loves to hug

Gill was finished 2 years ago...

Gill, were he still an NHL caliber dman, would be a perfect fit for the preds (whose current d-corp goes Weber - Josi - Klein - Ellis... and that's it for NHL experienced dmen). there's a reason why the preds, who have both abundant cap space and roster spots, are putting him on waivers.

as silly as the idea is, Pouliot would be a MUCH better addition to our roster next year than gill, unless were talking about adding Gill to the coaching staff

Exactly why I'm damn-near livid with Bergevin.

He extended a bunch of fringe players and locked us in with them. We can't get bigger, meaner, more talented or anything when a significant portion of our depth consists of the same no-talent, mediocre nobodies that we've been floundering with for years now.

Seriously.

Desharnais, Bouillon, Drewiskie (and Budaj). Was a single one of them vital to our operation? Then why were THEY extended. They occupy the positions and role that we needed upgrades on, size on the backend and in the top6!!

It's really infuriating, as Hal Gill is a significant upgrade over Boullion for instance but we can't pick him up because of Bergevin/Therrien's nepotism and pride.

Yup. Big bear.

His presence on the PK is sorely missed. Not sure I'd want him in our top 6 right now.

That's the only thing he was solid at, the pk, especially the 5 on 3. I've never see the Habs kill so many with him around

agreed...

the only rational I can see, is that MB really believes these guys (Desharnais, Bouillion in particular) were/are key to the culture he & MT are trying to build.

while I get that, I don't get the emphasis on using depth (Bouillion/Armstrong) or unproven (Desharnais) players as the focal point to build your culture.

in year one, it made sense to bring in some of those guys at low cost/commitment, but in year 2? it's time to start emphasizing roster upgrades, and paying bouillion/desarnais the way he did doesn't do that.

very interested to see how he approaches free agency this year, the window for "free-pass" is shrinking by the minute, won't be able to rely on the excuse of fixing the mess Gauthier left behind much longer.

There is a nice list of D-men I'd gladly take over Boullion this year. Absolutely no reason to have gone out at locked him down so earlier.

‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
WSH puts Jeff Schultz on unconditional ($100) waivers for purposes of buyout. Ditto for NYI and Rick DiPietro.

Go get Schultz!

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 7m
Hal Gill (NSH), Greg Zanon (COL), Matt Hunwick (COL) on regular waivers.
Andrew Berkshire ‏@AndrewBerkshire 2m
Matt Hunwick goes from leading the Avalanche in ice time in 2013 to waivers.

Wouldn't mind Hunwick either.

Jeff Schultz would be a great addition and might help motivate his younger brother.

I still have faith in Ian.

seems like motivation/consistency is an issue that runs deep in the Schultz family, doubt bringing them together would help much

What I want to know is what exactly are Bergevin's intentions this upcoming season? Is he looking to build on last year? Is he looking to stand pat and just let the draft do the talking? If he intent on improving any particular aspect of his club?

I really don't see much of a direction here other than his wanting to build through the draft...but even teams who were successful in this regard (Boston, Chicago) still rounded out there roster and were set on improving their teams year in and year out through trades, ufa signings and waiver pick ups. For example, does Boston win the cup without picking Chara, Peverley, Horton, Seidenberg, Boychuk Kelly and Campbell to round out their roster? Does Chicago compete without Sharp, Hossa, Oduya, Leddy ?

This may seem like a "why isn't Bergevin making trades" whine post, but it's not that. I just truly want to know what direction/plans he has for the team this particular season? Is he looking to compete? Is he still evaluating what he has?

Made zero sense to do so. Same with DD and Drewiske.

Odd signings.

I wouldn't be surprised if we added McGratten.

Prust/Dumont/White/McGratten rotating on the 4th line would be sick.

If not sandpaper at lesat guys that compete hard. Pouliot always needs a kick in the pants and Stalberg, though not as bad, is in the same category.

I was just joking. The only place he's better than Bouillon is on PK, 5 on 5 and PP Bouillon is eons ahead. I think Gill is only good as a #6 guy to kill penalities. Maybe he would help at playoff time, guys like Lucic hate playing against him because he can easily overpower them.

Hundwick is poor defensively and barely put up any points. The fact a team with crappy defense is letting him walk should be a huge red flag.

Schult is big @ 6'6 but doesn't get his nose dirty. Not sure what happened to this guy after the 09-10 season when he was a +50 and 23 pts in 73 games.
Did he have a major injury or what?
