2003 Draft Review

I missed the TSN segment today about the 2003 draft review. Anyone mind telling me what was being said? And other interesting tidbits?

Thanks.

Missed the beginning of it. But here's a brief overview of it

-Segment on Hugh Jessiman
-Segment on the Milbury passing on Parise and drafting Robert Nilsson (as well as Pierre McGuire's freakout)
-Segment on some other first round steals (Kesler, Richards, Burns, Brown, Burns)
-Segment on Perry and Getzlaf
-Debate over which draft was better: 1979 or 2003

Anywhere to rewatch this? Find it odd that TSN put up McKenzie's rankings and Button's mock but not this.

Weird indeed. They had the Lindros special on tsn.ca last year (or was it the year before?) too.

Maybe they just forgot. Someone tweet Bob or any of the other tsn crew?

Milbury's quote was the best part: ''Until wily Pierre sits in the draft chair...kiss my ass.''

There was another little segment w/burke about drafting dmen high and the risks that go with it and why he was so aggressive in trading up for pick no.2 to get Pronger back in the day. Asked his head scouts how hard should i persue to get this guy, the reply, we'd trade every pick in the draft to get him.

That part was really interesting after what happened last year with the Islanders offering all their picks for Murray essentially

I think that was during Craig Button's mock draft, not the 2003 draft special.

trading the picks was contingent on yakupov being there at 2

Another interesting thing I heard is that Gainey was trying to trade up to get Fleury, so happy that didn't happen.

I think you might be right. My bad. Was a good part of that tho. Even saw burkie crack a little smile at the end. Watched all three on replay last night so they all mixed together lol.

"The Dispatch confirmed through numerous NHL sources that Snow offered the Blue Jackets all of his team’s picks in last weekend’s NHL draft — one in each of the seven rounds — to move up from the No. 4 overall pick to the Jackets’ spot at No. 2, with the intention of selecting defenseman Ryan Murray.

The Blue Jackets, who were presented the offer by Snow moments after the Edmonton Oilers selected winger Nail Yakupov with the No. 1 pick, only briefly considered the offer, sources said. The Jackets had Murray — a polished, potentially NHL-ready defenseman — No. 1 overall on their draft board."

Ugh. I really hate Milbury. What an arrogant SOB. As if Pierre McGuire doesn't have the right to criticize possibly the WORST GM in NHL history.

Yes, that was great/funny!

My only reservation... the show was too short. Could have easily been an hour. Could easily be a 30 for 30 ESPN doc.

Not true. The offer wasn't made until after the Oilers made their selection

Milbury did have something of a point when he said that for all the flak Pierre gave him for passing on Parise...15 other teams passed on him too.

Mind you, 15 other teams didn't go home with Robert Nilsson, but I can see where he's coming from, at least...

There were two things driving the criticism:

1. Parise was small, which is why he dropped. Robert Nilsson was and is the same exact size. So, size wasn't an excuse.

2. J.P. played with the Islanders which made a very nice narrative.

1 is a good reason. 2 was a bad reason. Still, there's never really a bad reason to bite into Milbury, the dope.

I wanted Nilsson for the Devils at #22. He had broken Markus Naslund's record for points as a 17 year old. Figured he'd be great if he was half as good as Naslund. Naslund/Bertuzzi were at the height of their powers and many compared Hugh Jessiman to Bertuzzi.

I'd like to see the real time commentary again. At the time, I think Pierre's rant overshadowed San Jose picking Steve Bernier at #16 which was also a bit off the board, but I don't recall any criticism.

Wait they seriously tried to debate that? 1979 produced Hall of Famers at the same rate China produces toys.
