How many "overpaid" UFA contracts have to happen before people realize this is the new standard?

That's too much. $5m would be more reasonable. Could this mean he'll leave Boston and be going to FA?

They've won the cup since then, I don't think they're worrying about what they gave up so much that they have to trade Marchand in order to keep Horton.

Not really surprising to me. And it wouldn't surprise me if some team is foolish enough to give it to him, or close.

Every board here seemed to have a flood of proposals handing him ~$4-4.5M, and it just didn't seem at all realistic to me. The only place i could see Horton taking a discount anywhere close to that would be in Boston (and if he's gonna stay, he'll have to with them needing to get Rask inked to a big new deal). Anywhere else, $6M seemed like the starting point asking price all along, despite his shortcomings as a player.

On top of the injury concerns, consistency issues, and other little holes in his game...the biggest thing to me, is that if whatever team he lands with doesn't have a 'David Krejci' for him to play with...is he going to be nearly as effective as he's been in Boston?

In a year like this where he's the only real potential '1st liner' on the UFA market, he's going to have money thrown at him and it's one of those deals that has the potential to blow up really really badly in someone's face.

He's just playing hardball so that his realistic starting point is higher.

Pure strategy on his agent's part.

Who cares about what they paid for him? Why would they give up a better player just to overpay Horton and keep him around?

There's NO way Boston can afford that. We can hardly afford him at 5. Thanks for the memories, Horton. 7-1 with you in the lineup in the postseason. Good luck wherever you go.

It's gonna have to be on the lower end of 4-4.5 for him to stay here. He'll get paid 6m easily on the open market. Some GM will be stupid enough.

Marchand is better in every aspect of the game besides size and physicality. (which Horton rarely uses anyway) He's also younger and has no history of injuries besides one concussion this year. He's on a 4.5m deal. No way.

i think he can put up more pts somewhere else

In what world does Horton think he is worth that? Based of this years playoffs? 6M and those years for a 20 + 30 guy is ridiculous.

The funny thing is if he hits the open market I could actually see someone giving it to him.

James Neal makes 5 million. Horton is worth like 3.5-4

well he put up more pts in fla

if he can hit 60 pts consistantly he would be worth 6mill in the open market with the size and age he is at

I don't think he is worth 6 mill but 5 mill would hardly be an over payment. The guy has won a Stanley Cup, went to the finals this year and almost averaged a point per game in the playoffs. Teams aren't getting Horton for his great regular season's they are signing him because he is a beast in the playoffs. 3.5 or 4 million is an insult to someone like him. Now with all that being said i wouldn't pay him anything because of his injury concerns. Can't trust a guy to put up a point per game in the playoffs if he can't stay healthy. I expect him to resign for 4.5 or 5 million.

A good comparison is Clarkson who will get 4.5 or 5 million in the open market. Horton would be more valuable because of his playoff performances if there wasn't such an injury concern.

What i am saying is that that was said before he was traded to Boston then in Boston he has a average regular season based off his stats. So obviously changing team did not help the case. Perhaps he thrives better on teams without top notch caliber players throughout the lineup...who knows. The ONLY way he is paid anywhere close to his asking price is if the team is looking for a leader and they want him, or they are a rebuilding team with a large amount of cap space.

I feel bad for the team that picks up Horton. He has 2 maybe 3 more years in him if he moves West. If he stays East I'll be surprised if he makes it 2.

Fixed it for ya, you musta been thinking about Chicago..

I am sorry I did not realize that Boston had 11 NTC/LNTC's, which makes things difficult to get any of the assets which they gave up for him back. Also didnt notice Marchand was your leading scorer this shortened season, my bad.

Only other option is to trade peverly and boychuck or seidenberg inside their NTCs, It would be nice to get something back, rather than letting him walk.

I just can't see Boston getting as far in the playoffs without him.

11 NTCs!? Holy ****. And I freak out in EHM2007 when I have five! I didn't know Boston was in a situation like that.
